UVa., JMU play to 4-4 tie
The Virginia baseball team played James Madison to a 4-4 tie Saturday night in miserable conditions at the Caravelle Resort Tournament at BB&T Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The final four innings were played in a steady rain, and the game was called in the top of the ninth inning because of poor field conditions.
There were only seven hits in the game, with UVa finishing with four and JMU three. Virginia committed its first three errors of the year, leading to a pair of unearned runs for JMU (0-2-1). Continue reading “UVa., JMU play to 4-4 tie” »
#2 South Carolina sweeps VMI
The VMI Keydets took the #2 South Carolina Gamecocks to the limit once again Saturday, dropping a 3-2 decision to the hosts in the opener of a doubleheader in Columbia, S.C. before losing game two, 13-1.
In the opener, it was a sixth-inning run that proved to be VMI’s (0-3) undoing, as a two-out rally proved to be the Keydets’ undoing. With two down, shortstop Joey Pankake singled on a 3-1 pitch from freshman Reed Garrett (0-1). Catcher Dante Rosenberg then doubled to left, scoring Pankake and making it a 3-2 game, a margin that would hold up over the final three frames. Continue reading “#2 South Carolina sweeps VMI” »

Boston College 8, JMU 5
Boston College struck for eight runs in the first four innings and repeatedly silenced any rally attempt by James Madison with five double plays while recording an 8-5 triumph in the second game of the Caravelle Resort Tournament on Saturday morning at Coastal Carolina’s Watson Stadium.
JMU fell to 0-2 to start the season while BC improved to 2-0 after winning the first meeting ever between the programs.
The Eagles took advantage of free bases early as five walks, a wild pitch, a balk and an error factored largely in BC scoring two in the first and four in the second to grab a 6-0 lead. Continue reading “Boston College 8, JMU 5” »

South Carolina 2, VMI 1
The two-time defending NCAA champion South Carolina Gamecocks manufactured a run in the eighth inning and that proved to be the difference in a close ballgame, as they defeated the VMI Keydets 2-1 in non-conference baseball action Friday in Columbia, S.C. The game marked the season opener for both schools.
In a game that had been deadlocked at 1 since the third inning, South Carolina’s (1-0) Evan Marzilli led off the eighth with a bunt hit against Keydet reliever Alan Watts. The next hitter bunted Marzilli to second, but Watts retired star first baseman Christian Walker on a pop-up to first. He then got ahead of cleanup hitter LB Dantzler 0-2, but the Gamecock third baseman singled to center on the next pitch, plating Marzilli with the eventual winning run.
