The Virginia women’s basketball team defeated in-state and Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech, 66-40, Sunday (Feb. 19) afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

UVa., JMU play to 4-4 tie
The Virginia baseball team played James Madison to a 4-4 tie Saturday night in miserable conditions at the Caravelle Resort Tournament at BB&T Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The final four innings were played in a steady rain, and the game was called in the top of the ninth inning because of poor field conditions.

King’s three-run homer rallies UVa. past Coastal Carolina
The Virginia baseball team exploded for nine runs during its final four trips to the plate in a 9-3 win at Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field in Conway, S.C. The overflow crowd of 1,635 was a regular-season record for Coastal.

Dominant second half pushes #22 UVa. past Maryland
Senior forward Mike Scott scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Virginia men’s basketball team to a 71-44 victory over Maryland in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday (Feb. 18).
Freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon added 14 points and senior guard Sammy Zeglinski scored 11 points for the Cavaliers. Boston College 8, JMU 5
Boston College struck for eight runs in the first four innings and repeatedly silenced any rally attempt by James Madison with five double plays while recording an 8-5 triumph in the second game of the Caravelle Resort Tournament on Saturday morning at Coastal Carolina’s Watson Stadium.
JMU fell to 0-2 to start the season while BC improved to 2-0 after winning the first meeting ever between the programs.

Coastal Carolina 7, JMU 1
Starter Tyler Herb limited James Madison to one run over seven innings and Coastal Carolina struck for six runs spanning the fifth and sixth en route to a 7-1 victory on Friday afternoon at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in the 2012 baseball opener for both teams.

UVa. baseball drops season opener
The Virginia baseball team opened its 2012 season Friday afternoon with a 5-3 defeat against Boston College in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field in Conway, S.C. BC bounced back from an early 3-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
UVa starting pitcher Branden Kline (Jr., Frederick, Md.) worked into the fifth inning Friday and was credited with the loss. In 4.0 innings he allowed five runs (one earned), seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Reliever Kyle Crockett (So., Poquoson, Va.) was brilliant out of the bullpen, tossing 5.0 shutout innings to keep the game in reach. Continue reading “UVa. baseball drops season opener” »
UVa. women lose at #8 Maryland
The Virginia women’s basketball team dropped a 73-56 contest to No. 8 Maryland on Thursday (Feb. 16) at John Paul Jones Arena. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 23 points as UVa’s high-scorer.
The loss dropped Virginia’s record to 18-9 overall and 6-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The eighth-ranked Terrapins improved to 22-4 (9-4 ACC).

UVa. baseball opens this weekend
The Virginia baseball team starts its 2012 campaign this weekend as it travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to compete in the Caravelle Resort Tournament, hosted by Coastal Carolina. UVa is slated to play three games over the weekend.

Federal law slashed needlestick injuries, new UVa. research shows
A federal law enacted to protect healthcare workers from being stuck by needles dramatically reduced the number of such injuries, decreasing the possibility for exposure to bloodborne pathogens, research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine has found.
The UVA researchers examined 10 years of injuries – more than 23,900 in total – from hospitals around the country. Injuries were on the rise before 2001, when the law took effect. Needlestick injuries then dropped by about 38 percent in 2001 and remained well below the previous levels through 2005, the last year evaluated. Clemson dominates in second half, beats UVa., 60-48
Guards Andre Young and Tanner Smith each scored 13 points, and forward/center Devin Booker had 10 points to lead Clemson to a 60-48 victory over Virginia Tuesday night (Feb. 14) in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball game at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Junior guard Jontel Evans scored a game-high 17 points to lead UVa and senior forward Mike Scott added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers. Evans’ 17 points tied his career high.

UVa. women romp past Clemson
The Virginia women’s basketball team won its second-consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference contest, dispatching Clemson 68-36 on Sunday (Feb. 12) afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.
With the victory, Virginia improved to 18-8 overall and 6-6 in ACC play. The loss dropped Clemson’s record to 6-17 and 2-10 in league play.
Senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) was UVa’s leading scorer with 20 points. Shine moved closer to her 1,000th-career point as she now has 986 points over her four-year career.
