BC students inducted in Alpha Chi
Bridgewater College inducted 18 students into Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society, during the 2011-12 academic year.
Alpha Chi was founded in 1922 and its purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction.
Membership in the honor society is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors, seniors and graduate students at colleges and universities that have Alpha Chi chapters. Read more
BC recognizes philosophy, religion students
Bridgewater College seniors Rebekah L. Miller and Blake Strother and junior Jesse Winter were recognized by the Department of Philosophy and Religion for academic excellence at the annual awards convocation on May 1.
Miller was presented the Outstanding Senior Award in Philosophy for making the greatest contributions in philosophy courses. She received a certificate and a Kindle e-reader with The Complete Works of Plato and Aristotle. Read more
Bridgewater College recognizes seniors for excellence in history
Three Bridgewater College seniors received Daniel W. Bly–Lamar B. Neal History and Political Science awards from the department of history and political science at the annual awards convocation on May 1.
Caroleigh Aaron Newman of Martinsville, Va., Luke Roadcap of Waynesboro, Va., and Dudley Strosnider of Lynchburg, Va., received the Bly–Neal awards. Named for former Bridgewater College professors Daniel W. Bly, assistant professor of history emeritus, and Lamar B. Neal, associate professor of political science and history emeritus, the awards recognize outstanding performance by graduating seniors. Read more
Bridgewater College Alumni Association awards scholarships
The Bridgewater College Alumni Association recognized seven students for excellence in the campus community at the annual awards convocation on May 1.
The Alumni Legacy Scholarships are presented to rising juniors or seniors whose parent(s) graduated from Bridgewater College. The scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, rewards loyalty of alumni who encourage their children to attend Bridgewater College, provides a sense of connection with previous generations of BC students and fosters an interest in the Alumni Association and its programs. Bridgewater presents music awards
Four Bridgewater College seniors, Carina Botterbusch from Dover, Pa., Paul Brockman from Orange, Va., Kelley Harris from Staunton, Va., and Kyle A. Remnant from Bridgewater, Va., were recognized for excellence in the performing arts at the Creative Arts Awards on May 1.
Brockman and Remnant were presented the Nelson T. Huffman Award for Musical Excellence. Selected by the music faculty, this award is given to seniors who have excelled both musically and academically. The award honors the late Nelson T. Huffman, longtime professor and chair of the department of music, and includes a plaque and cash prize. Read more
Bridgewater College approves strategic plan through 2020
A strategic plan to guide Bridgewater College through 2020 has been approved by the college’s board of trustees.
“BC 2020: The Strategic Plan for Bridgewater College” identifies key areas that are critical to the success of Bridgewater in the next eight years and presents strategies for achieving goals within those areas. Areas addressed in the plan include student success, the Bridgewater Experience, enhanced and new programs, access and affordability, alumni and community, and facilities. Read more
BC students, prof honored for paper on behavior
Two Bridgewater College students, one alumnus and a professor of psychology have taken top honors at an international conference for a paper they wrote about the effects of alcohol-caffeine drinks on behavior.
Seniors and psychology majors Tara Nicely of New Market, Va., and Andrew Moon of Forest, Va., joined Dr. Brian M. Kelley, associate professor of psychology at Bridgewater, and 2011 graduate John Graybeal, in writing “The Longitudinal Effects of Alcohol and Caffeine on Anxiety, Depression and Reward in Mice,” which won the “Best Paper Award” at the International Organization for Social Science and Behavioral Research Conference in Atlantic City, N.J.
