BC’s Stone Village receives LEED certification
Stone Village, Bridgewater College’s village-style residences that were constructed to conform to an internationally recognized green building certification system, has received “Certified” status as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) project.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. Read more
Bridgewater College names sustainability director
In its bid to continue to build on sustainability initiatives and environmental stewardship, Bridgewater College today announced the appointment of Teshome Molalenge as the college’s director of sustainability.
Molalenge, a 1987 alumnus of Bridgewater, has worked at the college since 2005, most recently as executive director of facility support and auxiliary services. Read more
BC police chief helps craft law-enforcement bill
Until recently, police officers at many colleges in Virginia were not recognized as law enforcement entities beyond the confines of their campuses.
Thanks to House Bill 771, which Gov. Bob McDonnell approved in April – and thanks in large part to the efforts of Bridgewater College Police Chief Nicholas Picerno – all that will change beginning July 1. Read more
AmeriCorps positions at BC to benefit Harrisonburg community
Three AmeriCorps VISTA positions that will help revitalize a needy Harrisonburg neighborhood are now available at Bridgewater College.
AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993. VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years. Read more
BC senior receives FCCLA scholarship
Bridgewater College senior Jessica A. McClean received the first annual college scholarship of $1,000 from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
McClean, a consumer and family sciences major, was a six-year member of Virginia FCCLA and served on the State Executive Council for two terms – first as vice president of community service and later as vice president of programs. She served as a chapter officer and participated in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events. She currently serves on FCCLA’s Alumni & Associates executive board. Read more
BC seniors recognized for work in health, human services
Eight Bridgewater College seniors were presented awards from the Department of Health and Human Sciences during the annual awards convocation on May 1.
Brittany Anderson received the Most Valuable Athletic Training Student Award. The award is voted on by her peers for the characteristics of leadership, integrity, dedication, dependability and personality. Anderson, an athletic training major, is the daughter of Mel and Margaret Anderson of Glen Allen, Va. Read more
BC students recognized for excellence in computer science, mathematics
Rebekah Broome, Kelly Rooker and Shawn P. Vernier were recognized for excellence during the annual awards convocation on May 1 at Bridgewater College.
The department of mathematics and computer science presented the Outstanding Senior in Information Systems Management award to Broome, the Outstanding Senior in Mathematics award to Rooker and the Outstanding Student in Computer Science award to Vernier. Each received a gift card to the college’s bookstore. Read more
