Bridgewater broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth inning and six more in thge sixth to defeat the Apprentice School, 13-1, Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.

Roanoke takes down BC, 80-73

Roanoke College opened up a double-digit lead in the first half Saturday afternoon and the Maroons held off Bridgewater College down the stretch to take a 80-73 victory in the ODAC regular season finale.

Roanoke big man Daniel Eacho had a career game in the first half against the Eagles to lead the Maroons to a 39-28 halftime lead. Eacho came into the game averaging just 3.9 points per game and had reached double figures just once this season with 14 points against Emory & Henry.

To kill or not to kill: Death penalty topic of debate at Bridgewater College

Bud Welch, whose daughter, Julie Marie, was killed in the Oklahoma City bombing in April 1995, and Jeff Jacoby, a long-time proponent of the death penalty, will debate “The Death Penalty” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

Ferrum knocks off BC in 11 innings

Ferrum College pushed across an unearned run in the top of the 11th Tuesday to defeat Bridgewater College 2-1 in non-conference baseball action.

Pitching dominated as each team pushed across a run in their first at bat and then the pitching staffs posted zeroes for the next nine innings.

In the top of the first, Jason Parker led off with a single and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Alvarez. Parker scored on a grounder to short by Brenan Iley to put the Panthers on the board. Continue reading “Ferrum knocks off BC in 11 innings” »

Bridgewater holds off W&L

Bridgewater College erased a five-point halftime deficit, built a 14-point lead in the second half and then held on down the stretch to defeat Washington and Lee, 81-78, in ODAC action at Nininger Hall.

The win was the second straight for the Eagles who improved to 7-16 overall and 4-10 in the ODAC. The loss was the second in a row for the Generals now 12-11, 5-9 in the ODAC. Continue reading “Bridgewater holds off W&L” »

Lynchburg holds off late Bridgewater rally, wins 66-62

Lynchburg College held off a late Bridgewater rally Saturday afternoon to defeat the Eagles, 66-62, in ODAC action.

Lynchburg jumped out to an early 13-1 lead as the Eagles failed to score a field goal in the first eight minutes of action.

The Hornets took their biggest lead of half on a layup by Austin Chillemi with 3:43 left, making the score 32-15.

The Eagles then caught fire and scored the final 14 points of the half to trail by just three, 32-29, at the break.

Emory & Henry knocks off BC, 57-46

Emory & Henry made the plays down the stretch Saturday afternoon and defeated the Bridgewater College Eagles, 57-48, in ODAC basketball action.

Turnovers and poor shooting plagued both teams in the first half.

The teams combined for 29 turnovers, 15 by E&H, and both squads shot less than 35 percent from the floor.

Bridgewater Civil War Institute focuses on those who fought

To continue its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Bridgewater College will focus its fifth annual Civil War Institute on “‘They Who Fought Here:’ Armies, Soldiers and Civilians,” and will feature four renowned scholars as panelists.

Race-car driver Leilani Münter to speak at Bridgewater College

Leilani Münter, professional race car driver and environmental activist, will speak on “Never Underestimate a Vegetarian Hippy Chick with a Race Car,” at Bridgewater College on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall.

How does someone whose livelihood involves getting only 1.3 miles per gallon of gasoline call themselves an environmentalist? Recognizing that Indy or NASCAR racing is “not an eco-friendly sport,” Münter has a strategy for minimizing an oversized carbon footprint. “I have a passion for racing, as well as protecting our planet,” she said. “I am committed to using this vehicle to introduce the millions of racing fans to the message of sustainable living.” Her goals include convincing auto racing executives to develop more fuel-efficient engines and eco-friendly venues. Bridgewater falls to Virginia Wesleyan, 72-52

Nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan bounced back from a Saturday loss to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 72-52, Monday night at Nininger Hall.

The Marlins, ranked No. 2 in the nation and coming off a 60-55 loss at home to Guilford, took the lead early.

Bridgewater scored first on a jumper by David Larson before a layup by Wesleyan’s Donald Vaughn tied the score. Chris Astorga then knocked down a 3-pointer for a 5-2 lead and the Marlins never trailed again.

BC snaps losing streak with win at Roanoke

Bridgewater College snapped its losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 71-67 victory over Roanoke College in ODAC men’s basketball action.

Bridgewater freshman Ed Reddick went to the foul line with 10.9 seconds left and the Eagles nursing a two-point lead. Reddick knocked down both foul shots to put the finishing touches on the Eagles’ victory.
