Gore leads VMI to big win over Radford

Nick Gore scored eight straight points to spark a 27-5 second half run, and the VMI Keydets overcame early shooting woes to top the Radford Highlanders, 71-58, in Big South basketball action Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

After the score was tied at halftime, Radford opened the second half on a 6-1 run. Gore answered with an old-fashioned three-point play with 17:17 to play, and after a Highlander three-pointer gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night, Gore tallied the next five points to keep the Keydets close. VMI gets key conference win

An 18-5 second half run broke open a back and forth game, freshman D.J. Covington had a career-high 20 points and the VMI Keydets earned their sixth straight win over the High Point Panthers, 87-74, in Big South basketball action Thursday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

With the game knotted at 41 in the opening moments of the second half, Covington converted two free throws to put VMI (13-11, 6-8 Big South) ahead, 43-41, and spark the game-deciding run. The spurt was capped by a Stan Okoye layup with 12:15 remaining, giving the Keydets a 59-45 lead, and High Point (10-14, 6-8 BSC) could get no closer than nine the rest of the way. VMI loses at Coastal

Despite a spirited second half, the VMI Keydets couldn’t prevent Coastal Carolina’s basketball team from making Big South history.

Late run pushes Charleston Southern to win over VMI

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers broke open a three-point game with an 11-1 run in the final minutes and went on to earn a 101-90 victory over the VMI Keydets in a Big South matchup Thursday night in N. Charleston, S.C.

CSU (13-11, 7-5 BSC) led for the entire second half but not without a challenge from the Keydets. Bucs held a lead as much as 15 points early in the second half and still had a 13-point cushion with 8:05 to go. VMI (12-10, 5-7 BSC) then scored the game’s next nine points, cutting the margin to four, and the Keydets then chopped the CSU lead to three on two occasions. The last of those came with 3:51 remaining on a Ron Burks put-back, but after a media timeout 30 seconds later, Kelvin Martin hit the first of two free throws to start the game-deciding run. UNC-Asheville continues mastery of Keydets

A season-high crowd of 3,157 fans was on hand at Cameron Hall, but UNC Asheville continued to dominate in Lexington and walked away with a 100-87 victory over the VMI Keydets Saturday afternoon.

With the win, UNC Asheville won its fourth straight game at Cameron Hall and salvaged a split in the regular season series. The Keydets had earlier prevailed in Asheville on December 31, 83-72.

VMI held the lead the majority of the first half, but was outscore 55-45 in the second half in the loss. The Keydets turned the ball over 15 times in the game, and shot only 8-of-18 (44 percent) from the free-throw line in the defeat. Continue reading “UNC-Asheville continues mastery of Keydets” »

VMI outguns Runnin' Bulldogs

On a night that saw him become VMI’s all-time leading three-point shooter, Austin Kenon paced the Keydets with 21 points, Michael Sparks added 21 of his own and VMI defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 85-66, in Big South basketball action played Thursday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

After VMI appeared to seize control late in the first half, Gardner-Webb responded early in the second period, cutting the margin to single digits, 48-39, with 16:29 to play. The Keydets misfired on a shot, and GWU had a chance to chip away even further, but was whistled for a charging foul on the offensive end. Liberty holds off VMI

Jesse Sanders had 21 points and 13 assists, David Minaya scored 22 points and the Liberty Flames defeated the VMI Keydets 100-82 in a Big South showdown played at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

For the game, Liberty shot 56.3% from the field, including 9 of 11 from three-point range (81.8%). The Flames (14-7, 8-1 Big South) placed five players in double figures, and had 26 assists to VMI’s 15. Minaya’s point total and Sanders’ assist mark were both career highs. Late run pushes VMI to win at High Point

Austin Kenon had a season-high 33 points, VMI pulled away with a late 13-0 run and the Keydets captured their fourth straight Big South win on the road, defeating the High Point Panthers 97-91 Saturday night in High Point, N.C.

With the win, VMI moves to 11-7 on the year and 4-4 in Big South play, including a perfect 4-0 mark in road conference games. Kenon went 12 for 13 at the foul line, en route to his fifth career game with at least 30 points. It was also the senior’s second-straight 30-plus point outing against High Point, as Kenon hit for 38 markers against the Panthers last season at Cameron Hall.

Charleston Southern run pulls Bucs to win at VMI

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers used a 23-3 second-half run to pull away from the VMI Keydets, and Kenny Mitchell and Kelvin Martin combined for 41 points and 27 rebounds as the Bucs triumphed 88-80 in Big South Conference basketball action in Lexington, Va.

The crucial run got started with 14:18 to play, as Jeremy Sexton scored to cut a VMI lead to 53-52. Charleston Southern then scored the game’s next 15 points, before Rodney Glasgow hit a three-pointer to end the Keydet scoring draught. Unfortunately for the home team, the Bucs responded with the game’s next six points and took their biggest lead of the game, 73-56 with 6:32 left. Coastal Carolina pulls away, posts road win at VMI

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers opened the second half with a 14-1 run, breaking open a close game and defeating the VMI Keydets 109-87 in Big South basketball action Thursday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

With Coastal (13-2, 4-0 Big South) leading by nine, Keith Gabriel hit a three-pointer in the opening minute of the second half to make the score 52-46, CCU, but the visitors scored 14 of the next 15 points and claimed a 66-47 lead with 15:48 to play. VMI posts Big South win

Senior guard Austin Kenon and junior guard Keith Gabriel combined for 48 points to lead VMI over UNC Asheville, 83-72, Friday afternoon at the Justice Center.

VMI secured its first Big South Conference win of the year and snapped a 13-game UNC Asheville homecourt winning streak. The Keydets prevailed for the fourth time in its last five trips to the Justice Center floor. VMI moved to 8-5, 1-2 BSC while Asheville slipped to 6-7, 1-2 BSC.

Kenon sparked several VMI runs with perimeter shooting and hit five 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 26 points while Gabriel slashed his way to a 22-point outing hitting 8- of-16 attempts from the floor. Continue reading “VMI posts Big South win” »

Marshall dumps cold-shooting VMI

The Marshall Thundering Herd placed five players in double figures, led by double-doubles from Nigel Spikes and DeAndre Kane, en route to a 98-70 win over the VMI Keydets in non-conference men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon in Huntington, W. Va.

Marshall captured its fifth straight win and moved to 8-2 while the Keydets fell to 7-5.
