Teven Jones: ACC championship for UVa. was ‘best experience of my life’

The first thing going through the mind of Teven Jones as he climbed the ladder to take his snip at the net being cut down to mark UVa.’s first outright regular-season ACC championship since 1981: “Don’t fall down.”

Derrick Gordon converted a layup for #16 Massachusetts with eight seconds left in regulation to give the Minutemen the final 88-87 lead Wednesday night in the Patriot Center. George Mason led by five with 41 seconds remaining before UMass closed the game with a 7-1 spurt for the comeback victory.

Chris Graham: Yes, Virginia, that Tennessee game just happened

It was as good a time as any to look at the RPI ratings. Going into Monday’s game at Tennessee, Virginia was a decent, if middling, 51st overall, sandwiched between VCU and Mercer. An RPI rating of 51 doesn’t guarantee you an NCAA bid, but you’re close, and if you’re UVa., you’ve got the whole ACC season to build on what was going into Monday night already the 44th-toughest schedule in the country.

Chris Graham: Craig Littlepage, Mike London, and Uncompromised Mediocrity

Women’s soccer is #1 in the nation, men’s basketball is ranked in the AP Top 25, baseball has been to two College World Series in the past five years. Craig Littlepage has a lot to trot out in defense of his tenure as athletics director at the University of Virginia.

Chris Graham: Still not sold on Tony Bennett

And apparently, I’m on an island of one on this, but no, I’m still not sold on the job that Tony Bennett is doing at UVa. I say that conceding that this year could be a monster year for Bennett’s Cavs, who were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll today, the first preseason ranking for Virginia since 2001.

UVa. basketball in AP Top 25

Will Tony Bennett’s fifth UVa. basketball team finally break through? Basketball writers seem to think so. The Cavs were ranked 24th in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll released Thursday. The preseason ranking is the first for the program since Virginia started the 2001-2002 season at #11.

Chris Graham: Not surprised by AP’s decision to fire Bob Lewis

Apparently I’m the only one not surprised by the Associated Press move to fire veteran Virginia political reporter Bob Lewis.
