Staunton VDOT District Traffic Update: June 29-July 3

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 16.56 to 9.6, westbound – Milling, paving and pavement marking operations. Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., but could periodically extend to 24/7 operations.

(NEW) Mile marker 29.4, westbound – Be alert for shoulder repairs on ramp. June 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for mowing and litter pickup as needed.  Wednesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, cleaning bridge ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

Route 259 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

Route 311 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement, June 22 until July 2, between Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and Route 1309 (Crossing Lane).  Passenger vehicle detour:  Drivers westbound on Route 696 turn left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane), right onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and then left back onto Route 696. Drivers eastbound turn right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive), left onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), and then left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane) back to Route 696. Truck detour: Eastbound drivers from the Rich Patch area should use Route 615 (Blue Spring Run Road) to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 60 (West Midland Trail) to Interstate 64. Westbound truck traffic trying to access the Rich Patch Area will travel Route 60 to I-64 to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 615 (Blue Spring Run).

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation. Pipe replacement and patching with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Patching with flagger traffic control. Mowing with a mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and cleaning paved ditches, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge until late 2015 while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, cleaning paved ditches, clearing sign areas.  Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 185.9 to 195.3, northbound – Alternating lane closures Sunday, June 28, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Monday through Thursday through July 2 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Shoulder-only closures Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. – Guardrail work and paving operations.

(UPDATE) Exit 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance over Route 606 (Raphine Road).  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 39 Alternate (Main Street, Town of Goshen) – Road closed July 14 and 15 for railroad crossing replacement between Route 39 (Maury River Road) and Route 42 (Virginia Avenue). Home and business owners will have access to their properties by approaching from the appropriate side of the work zone. Vehicles less than 11 feet 10 inches in height will be directed on the following detours:  Westbound traffic on Route 39 will turn right to remain on Route 39 and then left onto Route 39/42 (Virginia Avenue).  Eastbound traffic on Route 39/42 (Virginia Avenue) will turn right onto Route 39 and then left to remain on Route 39.  Vehicles exceeding 11 feet 10 inches in height will be unable to use the detour route because of a low overpass and will need to seek an alternate route.  Estimated project completion July 15.

Route 39 (Maury River Road) – Flagger controlled single lane closure for soil and rock testing. Weekdays from June 23 to June 30, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work zone is from 1000 feet east to 500 feet west of the Route 39/Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) intersection.

Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

(NEW) Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

(UPDATE)  Various roads – Mowing and street sweeping with a mobile operation. Pothole repairs, pipe replacement, and tree removal with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) – Flagger controlled single lane closure for soil and rock testing. Weekdays from June 23 to June 30, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work zone is from 1000 feet east to 500 feet west of the Route 39/Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) intersection.

(UPDATE) Route 606 (Raphine Road at I-81exit 205) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge maintenance work.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Mowing and sweeping of roads and bridges with a mobile operation.  Pipe replacement, ditching, patching, grading and brush cleaning with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 250 – Shoulder repairs at various locations with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 612 – Pilot truck-controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  July 1, noon to 5 p.m. and July 2, 7 a.m. to noon.

Route 640 (Bluegrass Valley Road) – Shoulder repairs from the intersection of Route 637 (Maple Sugar Road) to Route 250 with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 649 (Myers Moon Road) – Ditching repairs at various locations with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 663 – Pilot truck-controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  June 29 and 30, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 677– Pilot truck-controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  July 3, noon to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 697 – Pilot truck-controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  July 1, 7 a.m. to noon.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 90 to 92, westbound – Left lane closure for shoulder widening. June 28, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, and June 29 through July 1, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to the following morning.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and drop inlets. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 217.8, northbound – Be alert for shoulder repairs on ramp.  July 1, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday. (UPDATE) Route 42 (Little Calf Pasture Highway) – Flagger-controlled traffic for shoulder and guardrail improvements from Route 254 in Buffalo Gap area to Route 685 at Craigsville. Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over White Oak Draft. Work zone is about 0.5 mile west of Route 728.  Estimated project completion Jan. 29, 2016.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over Calfpasture River. Work zone is just east of Route 715 (Braley Pond Road).  Estimated project completion March 2016.

(NEW) Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road, Fishersville – Northbound lanes between I-64 westbound off-ramp and intersection of Routes 636/640 (LifeCoreDrive/Goose Creek Road) will shift onto new portions of roadway, June 29 at 9:30 a.m.

(NEW) Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro), northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system near I-64 on-ramps. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

Route 340/635 Intersection– Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder.  Estimated completion Oct. 23, 2015.

Route 340 & Route 1512 (Gloucester Road, Stuarts Draft)Right lane and shoulder closures through July 17 for utility work.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

(UPDATE) Route 620 (Pisgah Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed near Route 252 for bridge work over Naked Creek.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 3, 2015.

(NEW) Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue), northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system near I-64 on-ramps. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

Route 635 (Augusta Farms Road/Ramsey Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road widening west of Route 285.

(UPDATE)  Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) closed for paving, grading and utility work through July 1, between Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) and Route 630 (Caldwell Lane).  Route 640 west of Route 834 will be closed except for local traffic, allowing residents to access their properties in this area.  Detours:  Eastbound Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) traffic heading toward Route 640 will turn left onto Route 285, right onto Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) and right onto Route 640 to the end of detour.  Westbound – Route 640 traffic will turn left onto Route 834, right onto Route 631 (Ladd Road), right onto Route 285 and continue north to return to Route 640.  Northbound – Route 285 traffic intending to turn right on Route 640 will continue north on Route 285, then turn right onto Route 250 and right onto Route 640 to the end of detour. Southbound – Route 285 traffic intending to turn left on Route 640 will continue south on Route 285, then turn left on Route 631 (Ladd Road), left on Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) and left on Route 640 to the end of detour.

(NEW) Route 724 (Heizer’s Tanyard Road, Swoope) – Road closed July 6 through July 24 for box culvert installation over tributary to Whiskey Creek.  Work zone is Route 720 (Jerusalem Chapel Road) and Route 723 (Whiskey Creek Road).  Residents will be able to get to their property during this work.  Detours: Drivers approaching from the west end will detour west from Route 724 (Heizer’s Tanyard Road) then south onto Route 720 (Jerusalem Chapel Road) then east onto Route720 (Dry Branch Road) and then north onto Route 723 (Whiskey Creek Road) back to Route724. Drivers approaching from the east will go east on Route 724 (Heizer’s Tanyard Road) then south onto Route 723 (Whiskey Creek Road) then west onto Route 720 (Dry Branch Road) and north onto Route 720 (Jerusalem Chapel Road) back to Route724.

Route 747– Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for paving operations from Route 760 to Route 809.  Monday through Saturday.  Estimated completion July 2.

Route 801 (Hangers Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) and Route 835 (Hotchkiss Road) for bridge replacement. Traffic will follow the posted detour. Local traffic will have access during construction. Estimated completion October 2015.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, cleaning paved ditches and hand mowing bridge slopes. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 238.4, southbound – Shoulder closure for bridge repairs on Route 990 (Imboden Road) over I-81. Estimated completion July 31.

(UPDATE) Exit 243 – Northbound lane closures as needed for repairs on ramp over I-81. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Additional shoulder closures as needed Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Thursday.

Route 340 (Town of Elkton) – Periodic flagger-controlled lane closures for sidewalk and road improvements. Work zone from F Street to 0.18 miles south of East Street.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion Sept. 18, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 704 (Boyers Road) – Travel lane shift about 0.4 mile south of Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) due to earth-moving work for Southeast Connector project.  This traffic pattern will remain in place 24/7 until connector road opens.

(UPDATE) Route 990 (Imboden Road) – Southbound shoulder closure for bridge repairs over I-81 at mile marker 238.4. Estimated completion July 31.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Thursday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Thursday.

Route 263 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Thursday.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 758 (7 Fountains Road-Fort Valley area) – Road closure for bridge replacement over Passage Creek, 0.7 miles from southern intersection with Route 678 (Fort Valley Road). Local traffic can access properties north of bridge by approaching from northern intersection of Routes 758/678. Estimated completion May 2016.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Patching and dust control.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, ditching.  Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulders closed 24/7.

(UPDATE) Mile markers 317 to 313 (Winchester area), southbound – Alternating overnight lane closures for milling and paving. Monday to Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.  Estimated completion July 10.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange), northbound and southbound Be alert for construction vehicles and releated activities at exit 310 interchange and intersection with Tasker Road (Route 642) and Hillandale Drive (Route 847), as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Estimated project completion May 2018.

Route 522, northboundTemporary lane closures between Winchester city limits and Route 739 (Fox Drive) for the installation of utilities in the median.  Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.  Estimated completion July 1, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange),  Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.44 miles south of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project.  Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated  project completion May 2018.

Route 669 (Rest Church Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from I-81south ramps for Rest Church Road from Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) to Route 825 (Zachary Ann Lane) continuing to Route 661 (Welltown Road). Estimated completion July 3.

(UPDATE) Route 672 (Brucetown Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking , 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Work zone from Route 667 (Rocky Ford Road) to Route 668 (Shady Creek Road). Estimated completion July 3.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange), Northbound 24/7 right shoulder from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.31 miles north of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated project completion May 2018.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Patching and dust control.  Monday – Friday.

 

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 7, eastbound  – Right lane closed from Route 604 (Ebenezer Road) to Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road) for special event. Speed limit reduced to 35 mph during event with flaggers.  July 3, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road, Mount Weather area) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge deck over Route 601. Lane width reduced to 12’ and height restriction of 13’ in place.  Work zone speed reduced to 30 mph.  Work zone is about 0.5 mile north and south of Route 605/601 intersection.  Estimated project completion August 1.

(UPDATE) Route 636 (Westwood Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for pavement marking from Tom Whitacre Circle/West Main Street to Business Route 7.  7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 3.

(NEW) Route 657 (Senseny Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure from Clarke County to Greenwood Road intersection for pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 3.

 

 

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

Mile marker 0 to 15 – Debris removal, ditching.  Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 7, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge work at Shenandoah River, Monday to Thursday with variable schedules of day and night work between 8 a.m. and 4 a.m. the following day. Estimated completion July 1, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81
No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Lane shifts on north and south ends of the bridge replacement project over Gooney Creek. Access to Route 605 (Poor House Road) is temporarily closed. Follow posted detour signs. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Estimated completion Oct. 2015.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection from north end of bridge to Duck Street. Lane shift and closure of center turn lane from south end of bridge to just south of 17th Street. Through traffic using 18th Street will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street.  Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 605 (Poor House Road) – Road closure at intersection with Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) as part of the bridge construction over Gooney Creek. Closure remains in place until approximately late June when the new bridge opens to through traffic. Drivers who need access to Route 605 will detour onto Route 607 (Rocky Lane) east and Route 649 (Browntown Road) south to Route 605.

(NEW) Various roads – Patching, brush cutting and pipe cleaning. Monday – Friday.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511 and at 511Virginia.org. For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dial 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.
