Staunton VDOT District Traffic Alert: March 16-20

road-work-headerThe following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, replacing object markers, cleaning bridge ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 311 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Brush cutting, ditching and pothole repairs with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 661 (Midland Trail near Covington) – Flagger controlled lane closures for soil and rock testing at intersection with Route 719 (Bellegray Lane).  March 16 through March 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Estimated completion March 20.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Brush-cutting and pothole repairs with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Pothole repairs with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Pothole repairs and  brush cutting with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and cleaning paved ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3 – Westbound road closure from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight on Thursday, March 19, for pavement /pothole repairs in the area of the Maury River bridges near Lexington. Westbound traffic will detour south on I-81 to exit 150, and then follow Route 220 north back to I-64 at exit 27 in Alleghany County. Signs and variable message boards will guide motorists through the roughly 90-mile detour. From March 13 toMarch 19 when the detour takes effect the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour and vehicle width limitations reduced to 10 feet 6 inches. Motorists may encounter rough pavement until repairs are complete.

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge for about a year while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, repairing mile marker signs, replacing object markers and cleaning paved ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 175 to 195, northbound – Right shoulder closures at various locations for guardrail upgrades. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. Estimated completion June 9, 2015

Mile marker 200.6, southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance work over Route 710 (Sterrett Road).  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 31, 2015.

Mile marker 205.1, exit 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance work over Route 606 (Raphine Road).  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion April 30, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 606 (Raphine Road at I-81exit 205) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge maintenance work.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 31, 2015.

Route 710 (Sterrett Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance work.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 31, 2015.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Sweeping bridges and intersections with a mobile operation.  Ditching, brush cutting, pothole repairs, shoulder repairs, grading and pipe replacement with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 250 (Mountain Turnpike) – Road closed to commercial truck traffic March 23-27 during repairs to a rock retaining wall. Flaggers will control passenger vehicles through the work zone which is about 1.2 miles east of the intersection with Route 637 (Maple Sugar Road). Beginning morning of March 23, trucks will use a detour that adds approximately 27 miles to their route.  Detours are as follows: Eastbound traffic will follow West Virginia Route 92 south, then Route 84 east into Highland County, Virginia, and then Route 220 north back to Route 250. Westbound traffic will follow Route 220 south, then Route 84 west into West Virginia, then Route 92 north back to Route 250.

Route 250 – Brush cutting from McDowell to Monterey. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Tree removal with flagger control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Possible left or right shoulder closures for installation of underground conduit system in median. Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion September 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, repairing mile marker signs, replacing object markers, cleaning bridge slopes and paved ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 207 – Right shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 620 bridge over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Mile marker 209.2 – Right shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 671 (Alamo Chapel Road) bridge over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Mile marker 216.2 – Shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 655 bridge over I-81. Monday throughThursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

(NEW) Mile marker 216.3, northbound – Left lane and left shoulder closures Sunday, March 15 at 6 p.m. toMonday, March 17 at 6 a.m. for Dominion Power utility work across I-81.

Mile marker 219.9 – Shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 647 (Christians Creek Road) bridge over I-81. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Mile marker 228.4 – Shoulder closures as needed for Route 781 (Mill Race Road) bridge work over I-81. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Mile marker 230.3 – Shoulder closure as needed for Route 742 (Toll Gate Road) bridge work over I-81. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike)Single lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspection at I-64 bridge over Route 250. March 19, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 250 (Hanky Mountain Highway), westbound Periodic right lane closures with flagging operations for shoulder work. 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Work zone is 0.61 miles west of Route 728 to 0.43 miles west of Route 728.   

Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road-widening project between Route 636 and Route 635.

Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 340 – Right shoulder closures as needed at various locations for fiber optic installation from Route 11/Greenville to the Augusta/Rockingham County Line. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 340/635 Intersection– Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder.  Estimated completion October 23, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Lane closures with flagger traffic control for intersection improvements at Route 648. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion May 31, 2015.

Route 620 (Spottswood Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for repairs on Route 620 bridge over I-81. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road-widening project west of Route 285.

Route 647 (Christians Creek Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 648 (Christians Creek Road) – Alternating lane closures with flaggers for intersection improvements at Route 648/Route 608 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule will resume. Estimated completion May 31, 2015.

Route 655 (Walnut Hills Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for bridge repairs over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 671 (Alamo Chapel Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for bridge repairs over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 742 (Toll Gate Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 781 (Mill Race Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge work over I-81.  Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion March 27, 2015.

Route 801 (Hangers Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) and Route 835 (Hotchkiss Road) for bridge replacement. Traffic will follow the posted detour. Local traffic will have access during construction. Estimated completion October 2015.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Pothole repairs as needed. Debris removal and fence repair.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 33 – Westbound right shoulder closure from Greene County line to 200’ west for drainage work.  Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Estimated completion Friday March 27, 2015.

Route 257 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

(NEW) Route 290 (College Street, Town of Dayton), westbound – Road closed from Route 1208 (Mill Street) to Route 42 (Main Street) for sidewalk repairs. March 17 to March 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  Detours:  Route 701 (Silver Lake Road) to Route 732 (Eberly Road) to Route 42 (Harpine Highway) or Route 1207 (High Street) to Route 1209 (Thompson Street) to Route 42.

(NEW) Route 340 (Town of Elkton) – Periodic flagger-controlled lane closures for sidewalk and road improvement project. Work zone 0.013 miles north of F Street to 0.18 miles south of East Street.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion Sept. 18, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

(NEW) Mile Marker 288.9 to 295.3, northbound – Right shoulder closures for bridge inspection at Route 657, Route 655 and Route 638 overpass locations. March 16, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 601 (Battlefield Road)Single lane closures with flagger for bridge inspection at I-81 bridge over Route 601.  March 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 760 (Water Street) – Flagger controlled traffic from Route 1403 to 0.30 mile east for bridge replacement over Stony Creek. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Motorists should expect minor delays. Estimated project completion June 2015.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Pothole repairs as needed.  Debris removal, brush removal on bridge slopes and cleaning paved ditches. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 50, westbound – Left lane closure at Route 37 (J K Robinson) overpass for bridge inspection.  March 19, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Pothole patching, shoulder work and brush cutting.

 

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 340 (Town of Berryville) – Flagger controlled traffic for sidewalk replacement work at various locations. March 16 through 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

INTERSTATE 66

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15, northbound and southbound – Pothole repairs as needed. Debris removal, brush removal on bridge slopes and cleaning paved ditches.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – New traffic pattern with lane shifts on north and south ends of the bridge replacement project over Gooney Creek. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Estimated completion Oct. 2015.

(NEW) Route 340/522, northbound and southbound – Alternating right lane closures March 17 and alternating left lane closures March 18, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days for bridge inspections at I-66 overpass.

Route 340/522 (North Shenandoah Avenue / Winchester Road), from Duck Street to 17th Street – Old South Fork bridge replacement and interchange modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and 340/522.  Additional lane shift and closure of center turn lane from the south end of the bridge to just past 17th Street and closure of 18th Street to through traffic. Through traffic will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street. Lane shifts on Route 55 just west of Route 340/522. These changes will be in effect through summer 2015.  Estimated bridge completion December 2017.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511 and at 511Virginia.org. For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dial 1-800-FOR-ROAD(1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.
