Staunton VDOT District Traffic Alert: June 22-26

road-work-headerThe following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 16.56 to 9.6, westbound – Milling, paving and pavement marking operations. Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., but could periodically extend to 24/7 operations.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for mowing and litter pickup as needed.  Wednesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for pothole patching. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, cleaning bridge ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 259 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 311 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement, June 22 until July 2, between Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and Route 1309 (Crossing Lane).  Passenger vehicle detour:  Drivers westbound on Route 696 turn left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane), right onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and then left back onto Route 696. Drivers eastbound turn right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive), left onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), and then left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane) back to Route 696. Truck detour: Eastbound drivers from the Rich Patch area should use Route 615 (Blue Spring Run Road) to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 60 (West Midland Trail) to Interstate 64. Westbound truck traffic trying to access the Rich Patch Area will travel Route 60 to I-64 to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 615 (Blue Spring Run).

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 220 – Lane closures for milling, paving and pavement marking operations, June 21 to 26, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Work zone from 0.11 mile north of Route 39 west to Route 648.

Various roads – Patching with flagger traffic control. Mowing with a mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge until late 2015 while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and cleaning paved ditches, Monday to Friday,7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Mowing, litter pickup, Sunday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for pothole patching.  Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and cleaning paved ditches, slopes and drop inlets,  Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 185.9 to 195.3, northbound – Alternating lane closures Sunday, June 21, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Monday through Friday through June 26 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Shoulder-only closures Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. – Guardrail work and paving operations.

(NEW) Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Single lane closures as needed for pothole patching.  Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Exit 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance over Route 606 (Raphine Road).  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

(NEW) Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) – Flagger controlled single lane closure for soil and rock testing. Weekdays from June 23 to June 30, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work zone is from 1000 feet east to 500 feet west of the Route 39/Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) intersection.

Route 606 (Raphine Road at I-81exit 205) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge maintenance work.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation.  Pipe replacement, ditching, patching, grading and brush cleaning with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 640 (Bluegrass Valley Road) – Shoulder repairs from the intersection of Route 637 (Maple Sugar Road) to Route 250 with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 649 (Myers Moon Road) – Ditching repairs at various locations with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Route 663 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  June 23, noon to 5 p.m. and June 24 to June 26, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 688 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  June 22, noon to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 734 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  June 22, 7 a.m. to noon.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system in the Afton Mountain area. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching, June 24 to 25, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. following morning.

Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway, Greenville area) – Alternating single lane and shoulder closures for inspection of I-81 bridge over Route 11. Tuesday, June 23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 42 (Little Calf Pasture Highway) – Flagger-controlled traffic for shoulder and guardrail improvements from Route 254 in Buffalo Gap area to Route 685 at Craigsville. Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over White Oak Draft. Work zone is about 0.5 mile west of Route 728.  Estimated project completion Jan. 29, 2016.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over Calfpasture River. Work zone is just east of Route 715 (Braley Pond Road).  Estimated project completion March 2016.

Route 340/635 Intersection– Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder.  Estimated completion Oct. 23, 2015.

(UPDATE) Route 340 & Route 1512 (Gloucester Road, Stuarts Draft)Right lane and shoulder closures through July 17 for utility work.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike Road/Sherando) – Road closed June 15 to July 3 for installation of box culvert over tributary to Back Creek.  Work zone is between Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) and Route 664 (Mount Torey Road).  Residents will be able to get to their property during this work.  Detours: Eastbound drivers will turn northwest on Route 634 (China Clay Road), northeast on Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road), east on Route 664 (Nursery Road) and then south on Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) to the end of the detour. Westbound drivers will turn north on Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road), west on Route 664 (Nursery Road), southwest on Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and then southeast on Route 634 (China Clay Road) to the end of the detour. Estimated project completion July 3, weather permitting.

Route 620 (Pisgah Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed near Route 252 for bridge work over Naked Creek.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Route 635 (Augusta Farms Road/Ramsey Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road widening west of Route 285.

(UPDATE) Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) closed for paving, grading and utility work through Friday, June 26, between Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) and Route 630 (Caldwell Lane).  Route 640 west of Route 834 will be closed except for local traffic, allowing residents to access their properties in this area.  Detours:  Eastbound Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) traffic heading toward Route 640 will turn left onto Route 285, right onto Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) and right onto Route 640 to the end of detour.  Westbound – Route 640 traffic will turn left onto Route 834, right onto Route 631 (Ladd Road), right onto Route 285 and continue north to return to Route 640.  Northbound – Route 285 traffic intending to turn right on Route 640 will continue north on Route 285, then turn right onto Route 250 and right onto Route 640 to the end of detour. Southbound – Route 285 traffic intending to turn left on Route 640 will continue south on Route 285, then turn left on Route 631 (Ladd Road), left on Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) and left on Route 640 to the end of detour.

(NEW) Route 662 (Stover School Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for inspection of I-81 northbound and southbound bridges over Route 662. Monday, June 22, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Route 747– Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for paving operations from Route 760 to Route 809.  Monday through Saturday.  Estimated completion July 2.

Route 801 (Hangers Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) and Route 835 (Hotchkiss Road) for bridge replacement. Traffic will follow the posted detour. Local traffic will have access during construction. Estimated completion October 2015.

Route 847 (Valley Church Road) – Road closed through June 24 for pipe replacement over wet weather stream. This closure is a weekday/daytime only closure. The work zone is 0.2 mile west of Route 771 (Airport Road) to 0.3 mile east of Route 773 (Virginia Mills Road).  Detours are in place:  Drivers approaching from the east will go east on Route 847 (Valley Church Road), then north onto Route 771 (Airport Road), and then west onto Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road), and then south onto Route 773 (Virginia Mills Road), then back onto Route 847 (Valley Church Road).  Drivers approaching from the west will go west on 847 (Valley Church Road) and then north on Route773 (Virginia Mills Road), then east onto Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road), then south onto Route 771 (Airport Road), then west back onto Route 847.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, cleaning paved ditches and hand mowing bridge slopes. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 238.4, southbound – Shoulder closure June 22 to 26 for bridge repairs on Route 990 (Imboden Road) over I-81.

Exit 243 – Northbound lane closures as needed for repairs on ramp over I-81. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Additional shoulder closures as needed Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

(NEW) Mile marker 260.3 to 260.4 – Shoulder closures for bridge inspection at Route 796 (Newdale School Road) over I-81. Tuesday, June 23, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Town of Elkton) – Periodic flagger-controlled lane closures for sidewalk and road improvements. Work zone from F Street to 0.18 miles south of East Street.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion Sept. 18, 2015.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 704 (Boyers Road) – Travel lane shift about 0.4 mile south of Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) due to earth-moving work for Southeast Connector project.  This traffic pattern will remain in place 24/7 until connector road opens.

(UPDATE) Route 815 (Hollow Road, Fulks Run area) – Road closed until June 22 between Route 612 and Route 814 for box culvert replacement over tributary to the North Fork of the Shenandoah River.  A “stop and proceed” detour will be in place 24/7 until work is complete.

(NEW) Route 867 (North River Road , Mount Crawford area) – Portion of road and the bridge over Pleasant Run east of Interstate 81 closed for repairs due to traffic accident.  Detour to Route 11 north, onto Route 257 east and back onto Route 867. Estimated completion is June 22, 2015.

(NEW) Route 990 (Imboden Road) – Southbound shoulder closure June 22 to June 26 for bridge repairs over I-81 at mile marker 238.4. Estimated completion June 26.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

(NEW) Route 340 (Main Street in Stanley) – Road closed for railroad repairs June 24 to June 26.  Detour will be posted using Park Road and Judy Lane.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Fence and mile post repairs. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 758 (7 Fountains Road-Fort Valley area) – Road closure for bridge replacement over Passage Creek, 0.7 miles from southern intersection with Route 678 (Fort Valley Road). Local traffic can access properties north of bridge by approaching from northern intersection of Routes 758/678. Estimated completion May 2016.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Brush cutting, patching and mowing.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, cleaning catch basins, and shoulder repairs. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for shoulder widening as part of exit 310 interchange project. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.  Friday, 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning. Northbound and southbound left shoulders closed 24/7 from 0.51 miles south to 0.55 miles north of interchange.

(NEW) Mile markers 317-313 (Winchester area), southbound – Overnight lane closures for milling and paving. Monday, June 22, to Thursday, June 25, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Mulberry Street (Town of Stephens City) – Road closed June 15 to June 26, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from Fairfax Pike (Route 277) south to Green Street for installation of utilities and pavement repair. Detour signs will be in place.

(NEW) Route 17 (Millwood Pike) – Alternating shoulder closures for bridge inspection over  I-81 at mile marker 313-314. Wednesday, June 24, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange), northbound and southbound Be alert for construction vehicles and releated activities at exit 310 interchange and intersection with Tasker Road (Route 642) and Hillandale Drive (Route 847), as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Estimated project completion May 2018.

Route 522, northboundTemporary lane closures between Winchester city limits and Route 739 (Fox Drive) for the installation of utilities in the median.  Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.  Estimated completion July 1, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange) – Northbound right shoulder closures from Rt. 846 (Rutherford Lane) to intersection with Route 37.  Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and guardrail work, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated project completion  June 26, 2015.

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange),  Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.44 miles south of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project.  Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated  project completion May 2018.

(UPDATE) Route 669 (Rest Church Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from I-81south ramps for Rest Church Road from Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) to Route 825 (Zachary Ann Lane) continuing to Route 661 (Welltown Road). Estimated completion July 3.

(UPDATE) Route 672 (Brucetown Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking , 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Work zone from Route 667 (Rocky Ford Road) to Route 668 (Shady Creek Road). Estimated completion June 26.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange), Northbound 24/7 right shoulder from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.31 miles north of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated project completion May 2018.

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road, Mount Weather area) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge deck over Route 601. Lane width reduced to 12’ and height restriction of 13’ in place.  Work zone speed reduced to 30 mph.  Work zone is about 0.5 mile north and south of Route 605/601 intersection.  Estimated project completion August 1.

(UPDATE) Route 636 (Westwood Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking June 29 to July 3, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from Tom Whitacre Circle/West Main Street to Business Route 7.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Mowing, brush cutting and pothole patching.  Monday – Friday.

 

 

WARREN COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 66

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15 – Debris removal and slope repairs.  Pothole repairs as needed.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 7, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge work at Shenandoah River, Monday to Thursday with variable schedules of day and night work between 8 a.m. and 4 a.m. the following day. Estimated completion July 1, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81
No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 55 (John Marshall Highway, Linden area) – Road closed Monday, June 22 at 7 a.m. for bridge deck replacement.  Work zone between Route 79 (Apple Mountain Road) and Route 638 (Freezeland Road). Signs and variable message boards will direct motorists on the following detours:  Eastbound drivers will turn north on Route 79, take eastbound Interstate 66 five miles to exit 18 (Markham), and then turn south on Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) in Fauquier County to return to Route 55.  Westbound drivers will turn north on Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) in Fauquier County, take westbound Interstate 66 five miles to exit 13 (Linden), and then turn south on Route 79 to return to Route 55. Estimated project completion 5 p.m. on Friday, June 26, weather permitting.

55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Lane shifts on north and south ends of the bridge replacement project over Gooney Creek. Access to Route 605 (Poor House Road) is temporarily closed. Follow posted detour signs. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Estimated completion Oct. 2015.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection from north end of bridge to Duck Street. Lane shift and closure of center turn lane from south end of bridge to just south of 17th Street. Through traffic using 18th Street will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street.  Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 605 (Poor House Road) – Road closure at intersection with Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) as part of the bridge construction over Gooney Creek. Closure remains in place until approximately late June when the new bridge opens to through traffic. Drivers who need access to Route 605 will detour onto Route 607 (Rocky Lane) east and Route 649 (Browntown Road) south to Route 605.

(NEW) Route 638 (Freezeland Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for inspection of I-66 westbound bridge over Route 638. Wednesday, June 24, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Various roads – Mowing.  Monday – Friday.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
