Staunton VDOT District Traffic Alert: July 20-24

road-work-headerThe following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 10, eastbound – Bridge work at exit 10. Lane closures Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.Exit ramps will remain open during construction. Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

Mile marker 16.56 to 9.6, westbound – Lane closures for milling, paving and pavement marking operations. Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., but could periodically extend to 24/7 operations.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, cleaning ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 220 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 269 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and cleaning paved ditches, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge until late 2015 while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, cleaning paved ditches and clearing sign areas.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Exit 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance over Route 606 (Raphine Road).  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 39 (Maury River Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for soil and rock testing. July 20 – 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work zone is from 1000 feet east to 500 feet west of Route 39/Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) intersection.

Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Mowing and sweeping roads and bridges with a mobile operation. Pothole repairs, pipe replacement, and tree removal with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for soil and rock testing at intersection with Route 39 (Maury River Road). July 20 – 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(NEW) Route 603 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations. July 23 and 24 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 606 (Raphine Road at I-81exit 205) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge maintenance work.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

Route 622 (Whiteside Hollow Road) – Closed July 13 – 24 for box culvert replacement. Closure is 0.1 mile east of Route 622 (Maple Swamp Road).  Drivers can use Route 623 (Turkey Hill Road) to Route 623 (Fredericksburg Road) as a detour.

(NEW) Route 627 (Sycamore Valley Drive) – Closed

July 27 through August 7 for bridge replacement over Gilmer Creek. Closure is 0.25 mile north of Route 628 (Mohler’s Loop) to 0.95 mile north of Route 622 (Chestnut Grove Trail). Traffic going north will be detoured to Route 755 (Dug Row Road) and then to Route 626 (Hackens Road). Traffic going south with be detoured to Route 626 (Hackens Road) then to Route 755 (Dug Row Road.)

(NEW) ROUTE 684 (Blue Ridge Road, Town of Glasgow) – Road closed from 1 p.m. July 20 to approximately noon on July 21 for water line work.  Motorists will detour from the northwest end by turning left onto Shawnee Street (Route 1104) to 6th Street (Route 1101) then turning right on Route 1101 to Powhatan Street (Route 1106) then turning left on to Blue Ridge Road (Route 684). Alternate detour is to turn right on Shawnee (Route 1104) to 7th Street (Route 1119) to 6th Street (Route1101), then right onto 6th Street, then right on Powhatan Street (Route 1107), then left back onto Blue Ridge Road (Route 684).  Rain date for this work isJuly 21-22.

(NEW) Route 711 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  July 22 from 7 a.m. to noon.

(NEW) Route 714 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations.  July 22 from noon to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 716 – Pilot truck controlled lane closure for paving at various locations. July 20-21 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(UPDATE) Mile marker 89 to 93, eastbound and westbound – Overnight lane closures for shoulder work and pavement marking. Eastbound: Friday night, July 17, from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday morning Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights, July 19-20 and July 23, from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. the following morning. Westbound: Friday night, July 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday morning and Tuesday and Wednesday nights, July 21 and July 22, from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. the following morning.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 205 to 219, northbound – Lane closures as needed for paving operations at various locations. July 19 and 20, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, and cleaning paved ditches, bridge slopes and drop inlets.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Exit 227 to Middle River Bridge, northbound – Single lane closures for paving operations, Sunday, July 19, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, and Monday, July 20, through Thursday, July 24, nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning.

(NEW) Exit 227, northbound – On- and off-ramp closures for paving. Sunday, July 19, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, and Monday, July 20, through Thursday, July 24, nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Detours will be in place during active work zone hours, reopening each morning at 7 a.m.  Travelers on Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) wishing to access I-81 northbound at exit 227 will be detoured to I-81 exit 225 off Route 262. Route 612 traffic will turn left onto Route 11 to Route 262. At Route 262, travelers will turn left and proceed to the I-81 interchange.

(NEW) Rest Area at mile marker 233, northbound – The rest area will be closed one night between July 19 and July 24 for paving of on- and off-ramps.

(NEW) Exit 235, northbound – On- and off-ramp closures for paving. Sunday, July 19, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, and Monday, July 20, through Thursday, July 24, nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Detours will be in place during active work zone hours, reopening each morning at 7 a.m.  Travelers on I-81 northbound wishing to access Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) at exit 235 will be detoured northbound to I-81 exit 240 at Route 257/Route 682 (Friedens Church Road). Motorists will go to the exit 240 off-ramp, turn left, cross the overpass over I-81 and turn left onto the I-81 southbound on-ramp and proceed to exit 235.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 42 (Little Calf Pasture Highway) – Flagger-controlled traffic for shoulder and guardrail improvements from Route 254 in Buffalo Gap area to Route 685 at Craigsville. Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Right shoulder closures Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for installation of traffic-management system near I-64 on-ramps. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over White Oak Draft. Work zone is about 0.5 mile west of Route 728.  Estimated project completion Jan. 29, 2016.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over Calfpasture River. Work zone is just east of Route 715 (Braley Pond Road).  Estimated project completion March 2016.

Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro), northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system near I-64 on-ramps. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Right lane closure on Route 340 southbound in Stuarts Draft for turn lane construction, July 13-24 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 340/635 Intersection – Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder.  Estimated completion Oct. 23, 2015.

(UPDATE) Route 340 at Route 1512 (Gloucester Road, Stuarts Draft) – Right lane and shoulder closures at Route 1512 (Gloucester Road) through July 31 for utility work.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue), northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Friday,6 a.m. to 7 p.m., for installation of traffic-management system near I-64 on-ramps. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015.

Route 635 (Augusta Farms Road/Ramsey Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road widening west of Route 285.

Route 693 (Cedar Green Road)Lane closure for utility installation between Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) and Route 704 (William Cousins Road) at Valley Manor Subdivision.

(NEW) Route 796 (Oak Grove Church Road, Hermitage area) – Road closed 24/7 from 8 a.m. July 20 through August 7 for bridge replacement/ box culvert installation over Porterfield Run.  Work zone 0.38 mile south from Route 828 (Cattle Scales Road) to 0.40 mile north of Route 782 (Brower Road).  Home and property owners will have access to their property. Detours:  Drivers approaching from the south will travel on Route 796 (Oak Grove Church Road), then southeast on Route 782 (Brower Road) then east to Route 254 (Hermitage Road), then north to Route 640 (Old White Bridge Road), then west to Route 828 (Cattle Scales Road) then south back to Route 796 (Oak Grove Road).  Drivers approaching from the north will travel on Route 796 (Oak Grove Church Road), and then east on Route 828 (Cattle Scales Road), then south on Route 640 (Old White Bridge Road), then west to Route 254 (Hermitage Road), then northwest onto Route 782 (Brower Road), then north back onto Route 796 (Oak Grove Church Road.

Route 801 (Hangers Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) and Route 835 (Hotchkiss Road) for bridge replacement. Traffic will follow the posted detour. Local traffic will have access during construction. Estimated completion October 2015.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, hand mowing around signs and ditches. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4 p.m.

Exit 243 – Northbound lane closures as needed for repairs on ramp over I-81. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Additional shoulder closures as needed Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 31, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

(NEW) Route 259 – Flagger controlled alternating single lane and shoulder closures for inspection of bridge over Lineville Creek at Broadway. Thursday, July 23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 253 (Port Republic Road) Flagger controlled alternating single lane closures for inspection of bridge over North River.  Tuesday, July 21, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (Town of Elkton) – Periodic flagger-controlled lane closures for sidewalk and road improvements.  New Terrace Avenue permanent traffic pattern will begin July 19. All northbound traffic will be directed down E street to Route 340.  Work zone from F Street to 0.18 miles south of East Street.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion Sept. 18, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 704 (Boyers Road) – Travel lane shift about 0.4 mile south of Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) due to earth-moving work for Southeast Connector project.  This traffic pattern will remain in place 24/7 until connector road opens.

(NEW) Route 721 (Fellowship Road) – Road closed 0.70 mile east of Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to 0.40 mile west of Route 717 (Indian Trail Road) for bridge replacement, beginning July 20.  A “stop and proceed” work zone will be in place 24/7 to allow traffic to move around the work site. Estimated completion August 28.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

PAGE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 340 – Alternating single lane and shoulder closures between Route 663 (Island Ford Road) and Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) for inspection of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Wednesday, July 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 340 Business (Town of Stanley) – Flagger controlled single lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily from Route 622 (Park Road) to Route 689 (Marksville Road) for paving and pavement markings operations.  Estimated completion July 30.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 616 (Leaksville Road) – Right and left shoulder closures.  Flagger controlled single lane closures as needed for construction of turn lanes at Luray High School. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion Sept. 4, 2015.

(NEW) Railroad Crossing on Route 629 (Mt. Carmel Road) Closed 7 a.m. July 22 through July 24 for railroad crossing repairs.  Detour via Route 638 (Mill Creek Road), Route 639 (Lakewood Road) and Route 340.  Local traffic on each side of the railroad crossing will still have access, but through traffic will be prohibited.

(NEW) Railroad Crossing on Route 631 (Middleburg Road) – Closed 7 a.m. July 22 through July 24 for railroad crossing repairs.  Detour via Route 632 (Alans Road) and Route 340.  Local traffic on each side of the railroad crossing will still have access, but through traffic will be prohibited.

(NEW) Route 662 (Rileyville Road) – Flagger controlled alternating single lane and shoulder closures for inspection of bridge over Jeremy’s Run. Wednesday, July 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, shoulder work and brush removal around signs. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 620 (Smith Creek Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 22. Work zone from Route 823 (Clicks Lane) to Route 735 (White Mill Road).

Route 682 (Readus Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 30.  Work zone from Route 681 (Stoneburner Road) to Route 42 (Senedo Road).

Route 735 (White Mill Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 22.

Route 758 (7 Fountains Road-Fort Valley area) – Road closure for bridge replacement over Passage Creek, 0.7 miles from southern intersection with Route 678 (Fort Valley Road). Local traffic can access properties north of bridge by approaching from northern intersection of Routes 758/678. Estimated completion May 2016.

Route 1002 (East Old Cross Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 22.

Various roads – Patching and pipe cleaning.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 324, northbound Overnight left lane closures for cleanup of a fuel spill in the median just north of the West Virginia state line. July 20-22 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and cleaning paved ditches. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 307 to 313, northbound and southbound – Slow-roll lane closures for utility installation at mile marker 310.4. Sunday, July 19, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulders closed 24/7.  Night work will continue northbound at mile marker 309 on July 21. The existing right lane will be closed nightly July 21 through July 23, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following mornings for installation of concrete barriers along the right shoulder area.

Mile markers 317-313 (Winchester area), southbound – Alternating overnight lane closures for paving, pavement marking and guardrail replacement operations.  Monday to Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day. Estimated completion July 20.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange), northbound and southbound Be alert for construction vehicles and related activities at exit 310 interchange and intersection with Tasker Road (Route 642) and Hillandale Drive (Route 847), as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Estimated project completion May 2018.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange),  Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.44 miles south of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project.  Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated  project completion May 2018.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange), Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.31 miles north of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated project completion May 2018.

Various roads – Mowing, ditch work and shoulder work. Monday – Friday.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

No lane closures reported.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road, Mount Weather area) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge deck over Route 601. Lane width reduced to 12’ and height restriction of 13’ in place.  Work zone speed reduced to 30 mph.  Work zone is about 0.5 mile north and south of Route 605/601 intersection.  Estimated project completion August 1.

 

 

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

Mile marker 0 to 15 – Debris removal. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 7, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge work at Shenandoah River, Monday to Thursday with variable schedules of day and night work between 8 a.m. and 4 a.m. the following day. Estimated completion August 1, 2015.

 

INTERSTATE 81
No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Lane shifts on both sides of new bridge over Gooney Creek. Shoulder closures and occasional lane closures as needed. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Estimated completion October 2015.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection from north end of bridge to Duck Street. Lane shift and closure of center turn lane from south end of bridge to just south of 17thStreet. Through traffic using 18th Street will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street.  Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 631 (Gooney Manor Loop) – Road closed 2.4 miles south of Route 632 (Fetchett Road) July 20 to July 31 for box culvert and pipe replacement. Detours:  Eastbound traffic will travel west on Route 613 (Bentonville Road) 1.04 miles to Route 631 (Gooney Manor Loop).  Westbound traffic will travel east on Route 613 (Bentonville Road) 1.04 miles to Route 631 (Gooney Manor Loop).

(NEW) Various roads – Ditching. Monday – Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
