Staunton: Additional vehicles may qualify for tax relief in 2017

staunton virginiaStaunton Commissioner of Revenue, Maggie Ragon, announced today that additional vehicles may qualify for Personal Property Tax Relief (PPTR) from the Commonwealth of Virginia beginning Jan. 1, 2017.

During its 2016 session, the General Assembly changed the registration requirements for personal use trucks with a gross weight between 7,501 and 10,000 pounds.

The change will mostly affect owners of three-quarter ton and ton pickup-style trucks that are not used for business, but as personal vehicles. The change does not apply to vehicles registered for business use.

In order to receive PPTR, these vehicles must be reclassified as pickups, require standard passenger license plates, and no longer qualify for truck license plates. Owners of such vehicles who want to take advantage of tax relief must successfully reclassify their vehicle as a pickup before January 1, 2017, to qualify.

Vehicles can be reclassified at the local DMV customer service center. If a truck is registered for business use, no action is necessary.
