Staunton: Open burning ban in effect

staunton virginiaDeputy Fire Marshal Perry Weller advises an open burning ban has been issued for the City of Staunton until further notice.

“Igniting an outdoor fire during red flag conditions increases the risk of rapid fire spread and you may also risk violating local ordinances and you may be held liable for damages and firefighting expenses,” Weller said.

Red flag conditions are likely Sunday and Monday, however the burn ban is effective immediately due to current dry conditions and a burn ban already issued for the George Washington National Forest.

A strong cold front will sweep through the area Saturday afternoon with much colder and windy conditions expected Sunday and Monday. Low relative humidity values are expected during this time as well.

Recommended safety tips:

  • Always obey all local laws regarding the open burning.
  • Even closely watched fire pits or controlled burns could contribute to unwanted fires in these conditions.
  • Dispose of ashes properly. Place in a metal container with a lid, not a plastic container. Do not place on any combustible surface such as a wooden deck.
  • Report open burning to 540-332-3842. Do not use 9-1-1 unless there is a true emergency.
