road work transportationThe following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton District during the coming weeks.

The Staunton District is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for pothole patching. Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Watch for crews removing debris, trimming trees, cleaning bridge slopes and around culverts and drainage areas, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Exit 7 to mile marker 3.7 – Watch for crews preparing paved channel along I -64 westbound and Frontier Lane (Frontage Road 199).  Traffic controlled flagger. September 26 to 30, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated project completion summer 2017.

(NEW) mile marker 7.4 to 7.2 – Watch for crews repairing slopes between bridges and Exit 7. September 26 to 30, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 16.5 to 18.5, eastbound – Lane closures for sweeping barrier wall. Monday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mile marker 36 to 31, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through September 26, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Patching with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 687 (Jackson River Road) – Flagger controlled traffic for paving, pavement marking and guardrail work from Route 641 to the Bath County line. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Estimated completionOctober 1.

(NEW) Frontage Road 199 (Frontier Lane)Watch for crews preparing paved channel along frontage road and westbound I -64 west of exit 7. Flagger traffic control. September 26 to 30, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated project completion summer 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 627 (Scottstown Draft Road) – 24/7 “stop and proceed” traffic control begins 8 a.m. September 26 for bridge replacement over tributary of Stuart Run. Work zone is 4.8 miles east of Route 678 and 0.3 mile west of Route 629 (Deerfield Road). Estimated completion October 19.

Various roads – Patching and ditching with flagger controlled traffic. Mowing with a mobile operation. Mondayto Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY                                                                                                                   

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for pothole patching. Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris and cleaning paved ditches and drop inlets between mile markers 45 and 41, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Single-lane traffic through work zone. Westbound drivers use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic limited to the right lane. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour.  Estimated project completion summer 2017.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching.Tuesday, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches, around box culverts, drain pipes and ditches, trimming trees and mowing storm water ponds. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 190 to 195 – Overnight mobile lane closure from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for crack sealing operations.
Mile marker 206 to 198, southbound – Right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion September 30.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 60 – Daytime lane closures for bridge work over I-81 (exit 188).  Estimated completion September 30.

Various roads – Paving and patching, ditching, pipe replacement, tree removal, street sweeping and pothole repairs with flagger traffic control. Mowing with a mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 708 (Gilmore Mill Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Cedar Creek just east of Route 608 (Shafer Lane). Detour using Route 608 and Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway).  Estimated completion late 2016.

Route 714 (Mackeys Lane) – Road closed September 19-30 for bridge replacement over tributary of Sheep Creek. Detours: Motorists approaching from Route 11 (Lee Highway) will detour onto Route 712 (Walucman Drive) and then Route 706 (Borden Grant Trail) to the end of the detour. Motorists approaching from Route 706 will detour onto Route 716 (Timber Ridge Road) and then Route 11 to the end of the detour.

Various roads – Paving and patching, ditching, pipe replacement, tree removal, street sweeping, grading and pothole repairs with flagger traffic control. Mowing with mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 250 (Monterey) – Shoulder closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday for sidewalk work at intersections with Wilson Avenue, Potomac River Road, Water Street, Spruce Street, Walnut Street and Mill Alley. Sidewalks in these areas will be closed to pedestrians and an accessible path will be maintained by the contractor. Estimated completion October 21.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 600 (Back Creek Road Upper and Lower) and Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control for ditching at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 609 (Burnsville Road) Flagger traffic control for pipe installation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 614 (Cowpasture River Road) Flagger traffic control for pipe installation north of Route 250, grading south of Route 250. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 678 (Bullpasture River Road) Flagger traffic control for pipe installation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY  

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching.Tuesday, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. the following morning.

Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees, cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile markers 94 to 107– eastbound and westbound – Median and right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Overnight left or right lane closures for paving in Albemarle County: September 26, eastbound at mile marker 103.6 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.;September 27, westbound at mile marker 104 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion October 14.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees, cleaning paved ditches, culverts, pipes and other drainage structures at various locations. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 207 to 209, northbound – Left or right lane closures Sunday through Friday nights, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for paving, drainage work, guardrail and rumble strip installation. Estimated completion early December.

Mile marker 211.5, northbound – Overnight lane closure for bridge work, seven nights a week, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.Estimated completion September 30.   

(NEW) Mile marker 213 to 237, northbound and southbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching. Tuesday, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. the following morning.

Mile marker 223 to 228, southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Saturday for fiber optics installation. Estimated completion September 30.

Mile marker 225, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures for bridge work, seven nights a week, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion September 30.

Mile marker 228 to 205, southbound – Right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion September 30.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) – Right shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures for utility work from Route 800 (Folly Mill Road) to Route 871 (Cochran’s Mill Road). Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion September 30.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 781 (Bald Rock Road) to Verona Elementary School. Estimated completion September 30.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 1920 (Sutton Road) to Staunton city limits. Estimated completion September 30.

(UPDATE) Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Daytime flagger traffic control 0.8 mile north of Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) for bridge maintenance. September 26 to 29.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures for utility work from Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) to Route 728 (Stover Shop Road). Monday to Friday. Estimated completion September 30.

Route 42 (Little Calfpasture Highway) – Right shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures for utility work from Route 254 (Buffalo Gap) to Town of Craigsville. Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion September 30.

(NEW) Route 250 – Watch for nighttime lane closures for signal maintenance work at these intersections: Route 640 (Waynesboro area) on Tuesday; Route 285 (Tinkling Springs Road) and Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) in Fishersville on Wednesday; and on Thursday, Windward Drive, Route 642 and 1100 feet west of Route 642 (Fishersville). Times will vary.

(UPDATE) Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion October 14.

Route 250 (Churchville Avenue)Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 722 (Vinegar Hill Road) to Route 42 (Scenic Highway). Estimated completion September 30.

Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) – Bridge replacement over Whiskey Creek, just east of intersection with Route 722 (Vinegar Hill Road). Occasional lane/shoulder closures as contractors relocate utilities and build a temporary bridge and approaches. Work zone speed limit is 25 miles an hour.  Traffic will detour onto the two-lane temporary bridge in fall 2016.

Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 42 (Buffalo Gap) to Staunton City limits. Estimated completion September 30.

(NEW) Route 285 – Watch for nighttime lane closures for signal maintenance work at these intersections:  Route 631/Route 935 on Monday and Route 625 (Wilson Boulevard) on Tuesday. Times will vary.
(NEW) Route 340 – Watch for nighttime lane closures for signal maintenance work at I-64 westbound off-ramp. Times will vary.

(UPDATE) Route 340 – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion October 14.

Route 340 (Main Street, Waynesboro) – Road closed between Constitution Park and East Avenue for replacement of South River bridge. Through traffic will use Broad Street (Route 250) as detour route. Local traffic has access to all businesses and residences throughout the project. Estimated completion late 2017.

(NEW) Various locations – Watch for daytime signal maintenance work Monday through Friday at various locations and times.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) – Pavement patching from Route 682 (Troxel Gap Road) to Rockbridge County line. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion September 30.

(UPDATE) Route 612 at Route 792 (Laurel Hill Road/Indian Mound Road, Verona) – Lane closures with flagger traffic control are possible Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. During other times, motorists should be alert for shoulder closures and construction vehicles moving in and out of the work zone.  Estimated completion spring 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion October 14.

Route 685 (Lehigh Road, Craigsville) – Road closed for bridge replacement over Little Calfpasture River between Route 684 and Route 42. Detour in place. Estimated completion late 2016.

Route 701 (Howardsville Road) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) to Route 697 (Old Greenville Road). Estimated completion October 30.

(NEW) Route 703 (Hewitt Road) – Pavement patching from Route 876 (Swoope Road) to Route 42. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion September 30.

Route 720 (Jerusalem Chapel Road) – Weekday flagger traffic control just south of Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) for bridge maintenance. September 26 through October 4.

(NEW) Various roads – Mowing operations in the Arbor Hill area. Estimated completion October 7.

(NEW) Various locations – Watch for daytime signal maintenance work Monday through Friday at various locations and times.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 242, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures for bridge work, seven nights a week, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion September 30.

Mile marker 245, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures for bridge work, seven nights a week, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion September 30.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Replacement of North River bridge. Watch for traffic shifts, shoulder closures and flagger controlled lane closures, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work zone from Route 694 to one mile south of Mount Crawford. Variable message boards and pavement markings direct motorists. Estimated completion July 2017.

Route 33 Business (Old Spotswood Trail, Elkton) – Nighttime flagger controlled lane closure 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for paving and shoulder work. Work zone from 0.66 miles east of Route 33 to Route 340 (near Blue and Gold Drive). Sunday through Thursday. Estimated completion September 30.  

(UPDATE) Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for milling and paving as part of intersection improvements at Route 340 (East Side Highway). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Estimated completion October 21.

(UPDATE) Route 257 (Ottobine Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for pavement marking and shoulder stone placement from Route 731 (Community Center Road) to 0.16 miles east of Route 613 (Spring Creek Road). Monday to Friday, with possible Saturdays. Estimated completion September 29.

(NEW) Route 340 (Stuart Avenue, Elkton) – Nighttime flagger controlled lane closure 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for paving and shoulder work. Work zone from Spotswood Avenue to Route Summit Avenue. Sunday through Thursday. Estimated completion September 30.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Periodic flagging for milling and paving as part of intersection improvements at Route 253/659  (Port Republic Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Estimated completion October 21.

(NEW) Various roads – Daytime line-painting operations. Be alert for mobile  lane closures and slow-moving equipment.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 602 (East Point Road) – Single lane closure as needed for utility maintenance between Route 33 and Route 646.  Estimated completion September 30.

Route 641 (Cave Hill Road) Road closed near McGaheysville between Route 991 (Jacob Burner Road) and Route 843 (Cemetery Road) for Stony Run bridge replacement. Temporary bridge serves as 24/7 detour with a stop-and-proceed work zone in place. Estimated completion is mid-October.

(UPDATE) Route 659 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for milling and paving as part of intersection improvements at Route 340. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion October 21.

Route 778 (Brenneman Church Road) – Road closed October 3 to 7 from Route 42 to Route 910 (Grist Mill Road) for drainage repairs. A 24/7 detour will be in place using Route 721.

(NEW) Various roads – Daytime line-painting operations. Be alert for mobile  lane closures and slow-moving equipment.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 – Intermittent flagging operations for replacement of bridge and approaches at Cub Run. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work zone speed limit is 45 miles per hour. Estimated completion September 2017.

Various roads/locations – Shoulder closures as needed for nighttime inspection of signs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Estimated completion October 11.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Mile marker 279, northbound and southbound – Nighttime, alternating lane closures for maintenance on bridges over Route 185 and Stoney Creek in Edinburg area.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion October 16.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 287 to 283, southbound – Nightly lane closures for  guardrail replacement.  Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion October 22.

(NEW) Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Single lane closure for inspection of bridge over Cedar Creek at Warren/Shenandoah County Line. September 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 185 (Stoney Creek Road) – Flagger controlled lane and shoulder closures as needed for maintenance on I-81 overpasses.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion October 16.

Various roads/locations – Shoulder closures as needed for nighttime inspection of signs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Estimated completion October 11.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Queen Street (Route 1201, Town of Strasburg) – Road closed between South Massanutten Street and Holiday Street for bridge replacement over Town Run. Detour in place. Estimated completion November 2016.

Route 663 (Artz Road) Bridge replacement over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The road will remain open during construction of the new bridge, with flagger controlled traffic 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion May 2018.

(NEW) Route 678 (Fort Valley Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for paving operations and pavement markings from Route 758 (Seven Fountains Road) to Warren County line. Monday to Friday; possible Saturdays.  Estimated completion October 7.

(NEW) Route 707 (Red Banks Road) – Single lane closure for inspection of bridge over North Fork of Shenandoah River.  September 27, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Patching, brush cutting and mowing. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday through Friday.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

No lane closures reported.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound –Watch for crews removing debris Monday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pothole repairs as needed.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulders closed 24/7. Speed limit 60 mph through work zone. Motorists should be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone. Estimated project completion fall 2017.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange Project), northbound and southbound Speed limit on Route 37 reduced to 35 mph through work zone. Newly built portion of Route 37 is open. Drivers should be alert for traffic pattern change at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road). Estimated project completion fall 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 522 (North Frederick Pike/Cross Junction) – Overnight right shoulder closures 0.19 miles north of Route 682 (Chapel Hill Road) for replacement of traffic management equipment. Monday to Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated completion September 30.

Various roads/locations – Shoulder closures as needed for nighttime inspection of signs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Estimated completion October 11.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange Project) – The speed limit on Route 642 is 45 miles per hour through the work zone. The newly built portion of Route 642 is now open.  Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersections with Route 37 and Route 847 (Hillandale).  Estimated project completion fall 2017.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange Project) – Newly built portion of Route 847 is open. Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road). Estimated project completion fall 2017.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Patching, brush cutting and mowing. Monday to Friday.

Various locations – Flagger controlled traffic for paving operations Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the following locations:  Valley Mill Estates (Route 1285), Hill Valley (Routes 1283 and 1284), Merriman Estates (Routes 1303, 1304, 1305, 1306, 1307, 1342 and 1346), Westside Station (Routes 1338 and 1339).  Estimated completion date September 30.

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15, westbound and eastbound – Watch for crews removing debris and cleaning under guardrails. Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Pothole repairs as needed.

(NEW) Mile marker 11 to 12 – Single lane and shoulder closures for inspection of bridges over Manassas Run and Route 647.  September 29, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Single lane closure for inspection of bridge over Cedar Creek at the Warren/Shenandoah County Line. September 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection. Temporary traffic switch for east and west lanes from 340/522 to .03 miles (A. S. Rhodes Elementary School) west of 340/522. Pavement markings, signs and traffic barrels will guide drivers through this area. Changes in effect through summer 2017 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly.  Lane shift at 17th street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection, placing all traffic on the newly constructed bridge. 18th street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017.  Demolition of old South Fork bridge and construction of new bridge continues. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Various roads/locations – Shoulder closures as needed for nighttime inspection of signs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Estimated completion October 11.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road).  Detours:  Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.  Estimated project completion June 2018.

Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Crews expanding Linden Park & Ride lot. Watch for increased truck traffic and intermittent flagging operations for excavation work, stone placement and paving operations. Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion October 2016.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Mowing, brush cutting and patching. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday through Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
