In anticipation of the approaching, significant winter storm, Staunton’s city manager has declared a local emergency, effective at 5 p.m. today.
The declaration of a local emergency allows the City to determine the use of materials, goods, services and resource systems during an emergency situation, which includes calling on the National Guard for assistance.
“We anticipate that resources from the National Guard will be necessary this weekend,” said Steve Owen, city manager. “While our snow removal crews will be hard at work, around the clock, to restore normal operations during and following the snowstorm, delays in City services are inevitable during a storm of this magnitude. We will be working diligently to resume normal operations as quickly as possible. In the meanwhile, we encourage you to help us help you. Your patience, understanding and adherence to City advisories is much appreciated.”
In preparation for the storm, residents should be aware of the following information:
- Please be patient. City services and local transit will be delayed or unavailable, and clearing substantial snow accumulations from City roads will require more time than usual. Be prepared and safe. Get snow prep and safety tips here.
- Trash pickup will likely be delayed. Those who receive refuse and recycling collections on Friday and Saturday should expect delays. City crews will resume collections as soon as possible.
- Park vehicles off of city streets. Your cooperation will allow snow removal crews to clear streets as efficiently and safely as possible.
- No parking on downtown streets. Parking restrictions in the Downtown Central Business District go into effect at 9 p.m. tonight. Cars parked on downtown streets will be towed if not moved. Residents with vehicles in or near the downtown area may park for free in any city-owned garage or lot beginning at 5:30 p.m. this evening. Free parking will remain in effect until the storm has ended and snow removal operations are completed.
- Clear the sidewalk in front of your home or business. City Code requires that residents and business owners clear public sidewalks bordering their home or business within six hours after ice or snow stops. If the precipitation falls at night, the owner or occupier of the property has until noon the following day to clear the public walkway.
