KurtisKurtis Brown, a first baseman for the Staunton Braves, is the final Valley Baseball League D-BAT Player of the Week for the preceding week’s games from July 19-July 25. He was 8 for 15, a team-high .533 average, with five runs scored, a double, 2 RBI, four walks, and one strikeout, and was second in the league for offensive output for this last week’s games.

As Staunton notched five wins in five games to move towards the top of the North division standings, Brown contributed to wins over the Turks, Senators, Generals, Tom Sox and Rebels—four teams of which have either advanced for the playoffs or are involved in a play-in game. Three play-in games are scheduled for tonight [July 27]. Staunton hosts Harrisonburg to determine the top seed for the South division.

A rising junior at University of Richmond from Champaign, Illinois, Brown has a .288 season average, which ranks him ninth on a team hitting a fourth-ranked (overall) .263 this season. Fellow first baseman Austin Edens, who is the designated hitter when Brown plays first, leads the team with a .352 average.

Brown is the seventh recipient this season, selected from candidates nominated by coaches and VBL media relations staff. He joins Strasburg Express first baseman Ryan Flick, Front Royal RHP Indalecio Romo, Charlottesville Tom Sox outfielder Kevin Conway, Harrisonburg outfielder Shane Billings, New Market Rebels left-handed pitcher and center fielder J.D. Waite, and Winchester Royals closer John Barr.
