It’s being held on Thursday, June 21 – the longest day of the year.

As part of the awareness campaign, the Y will:

  • Ask members wishing to participate to wear purple to help raise awareness
  • Have special fundraisers at the 8:30 am group fitness classes
  • Have a healthy snack fundraising drive
  • Sell circles and wristbands at $1 each to raise money
  • Have a casual dress staff day in exchange for a donation.

The Longest Day campaign at the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA is being spearheaded by Laura Hitchin, who heads the YMCA’s Adult Daycare program. Offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Y, the Adult Daycare program offers respite for caregivers who care for adults requiring around-the-clock supervision.

The Alzheimer’s cause is personal to Hitchin as she had a parent with Alzheimer’s disease.

(Watch Hitchin’s video on the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA Facebook page.)

“It’s a disease close to my heart, and I want to join with others to find a cure,” Hitchin said. “Alzheimer’s is one of the fastest growing diseases in our culture, and it’s also one of the most underfunded.”
