bridgewater collegeArtist Patricia Hobbs of Staunton, Va., will exhibit monotype prints of her work Aug. 29 – Sept. 27 in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College.

An artist’s reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Miller Art Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

To create a monotype, Hobbs paints an image on a plate, then runs the plate and dampened paper through a press, where the image is reversed and subject to the vagaries of ink, water, paper and pressure.

“Each monotype is unique, even in a series that is based on the same source and built on the same composition,” Hobbs said. “In this body of prints, I examine my personal experience of travel and explore the accompanying impressions of time and space,” Hobbs stated. “I am interested in contrasts – rural vs. urban, local vs. global, open vs. closed – as well as in transitory aspects of motion, light and atmosphere.”

Hobbs has received numerous awards for her work, including a 2016 Award for Excellence at the annual juried exhibition at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. She also received the first place award in Drawing, Painting and Pastels at the 2015 annual Bath County Art Show in Warm Springs, Va.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
