sierra club virginiaToday, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality issued a Notice of Violation to Mountain Valley Pipeline for failing to properly protect water from sediment released during construction activities.

In response, Kate Addleson, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, released the following statement.

“This Notice of Violation is like a guard dog with no teeth – all bark and no bite. The Department of Environmental Quality must issue penalties or fines to show they are serious about protecting Virginians’ water.

“This Notice of Violation is long overdue and proves the work stoppage that occurred two weeks ago should never have been lifted. There is no way to build this pipeline safely and the only way to fully protect our health, water, climate and communities is to scrap the project completely.

“The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a dangerous, dirty and unneeded project putting Virginians at risk. In order to protect Virginians’ air, water and climate, the Department of Environmental Quality should issue a complete and total stop to all Mountain Valley Pipeline construction in Virginia.”
