Senate Democrats call for Joe Morrissey to resign

state-capitol2Citing both the nature of his recent conviction and the urgent need to restore Virginians’ confidence in their elected officials, the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus this afternoon joined House Democrats and Gov. McAuliffe in calling Del. Joe Morrissey’s immediate resignation.

Said Democratic Leader Sen. Dick Saslaw, (D – Fairfax) “Virginians expect and deserve representatives whose conduct — especially towards children — is above reproach. Del. Morrissey has failed to meet that standard. He has disqualified himself from further service, and we urge him to resign for the good of both his district and the Commonwealth.”

Said Caucus Chair Sen. Donald McEachin (D – Henrico), “Unfortunately, lately, Virginians have seen all too much disgraceful behavior on the part of their elected officials. We must regain the trust of our constituents. We have a responsibility to lead, to demonstrate the highest ethical behavior and to insist on those standards for all those who are elected. With that in mind, Del. Morrissey should take the honorable course and resign.”
