Sen. Tim Kaine to speak at VMI graduation

tim kaineU.S. Sen. Tim Kaine will speak at Virginia Military Institute’s commencement ceremony May 16.

Elected to the Senate in 2012, Kaine serves on the Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations, and Aging committees.  He is the ranking member of the Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee and the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on State Department and USAID Management, International Operations and Bilateral International Development.

Kaine is a founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Career and Technical Education Caucus.

Raised in Kansas City, Kaine holds degrees from the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School.  He practiced law in Richmond, Va., for 17 years.

He was first elected to office in 1994, serving as a member of the Richmond City Council and then as mayor.  He became lieutenant governor of Virginia in 2002 and was elected governor in 2006.  He served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011.

Approximately 328 cadets are expected to graduate in May, 54 percent of whom will commission into one of the Armed Forces.
