Salem VA Medical Center announces new chief of staff

newspaper-headerSalem VA Medical Center is pleased to announce the selection of Anne C. Hutchins, MD as the new Chief of Staff effective March 24.

Dr. Hutchins joined the VA in 1989 as a staff physician in Primary Care/Emergency Department at SVAMC.  She left that position in 1992 and joined an Internal Medicine Practice at Carilion Health Care System in Roanoke.  Dr. Hutchins returned to Salem VAMC in 1992 as a staff physician in Primary Care/Geriatrics and Extended Care.  In 2007, she was the acting chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care and then appointed as chief of that department in 2009.  Dr. Hutchins served in that capacity until September 2012, at which time she was appointed as interim chief of staff.

In this key leadership role, Dr. Hutchins will be responsible for providing oversight of all clinical services at the Salem VAMC.   The medical center is a 298-bed hospital with acute medical/surgical, psychiatric and extended care/rehabilitation services, and has an active residency and medical student program in medicine, surgery and psychiatry.  The medical center is affiliated with the University of Virginia School Of Medicine, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.  In addition, Salem VAMC has over 80 other affiliations with 80 colleges and universities in associated health programs.

Dr. Hutchins brings her compassion and philosophy of caring for America’s veterans in an academic setting that is dedicated to providing excellent health care.
