Performing natural gas safety inspections requires Columbia Gas of Virginia technicians, and qualified contractors, to have access to company assets located on customer property.
The underground service pipeline and meter setting delivering natural gas to the customer is the property of Columbia Gas of Virginia and requires periodic inspection to maintain a safe energy delivery system. The safety inspections include the following:
- Inspect and maintain the company-owned meter.
- Inspect and maintain the meter setting attached to the home or business.
- Patrolling the underground natural gas main and service pipelines for potential leakage. Click here to view footage of a leakage survey.
- Surveying existing underground main and service pipelines with GPS equipment to improve the mapping of our underground delivery system.
- Locate and mark underground natural gas pipelines as part of Virginia law requiring any person to always call 811 before digging anywhere, anytime.
In all situations employees, and contractors, carry proper photo identification, operate marked vehicles and have uniforms for easy recognition. If you have questions ask to see the employee’s identification and if you have any doubt, immediately call Columbia Gas at 1-800-543-8911 before allowing a stranger to enter your home. Please report any suspicious activity to local police by calling 911.
