Staff Report

Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation executive director Howard Kittell is leaving the Valley to take over as president and CEO of The Hermitage, the presidential home of Andrew Jackson in Nashville, Tenn.

Kittell’s November departure has the SVBF thinking transition. “This is bittersweet for us here at the Battlefields Foundation,” said Irvin Hess, the chairman of the Battlefields Foundation. “We are thrilled for Howard—this is a tremendous opportunity for him. But we feel sad at the departure of this great friend and effective leader. We are comforted in the knowledge that his incredible work here has paved the way for the Foundation’s ongoing and future success. But we will certainly miss him,” Hess said.

The Foundation will initiate a nationwide search for a new chief executive in the coming weeks.
