River City Radio Hour ends its eighth season in style

river-city-radio-hourThe River City Radio Hour ends its 2014-15 season on Friday, June 19 at 7:30 pm.  The final performance of the season will feature an array of talent from the past eight seasons.

“We began the River City Radio Hour in the fall of 2007,” said Clair Myers, producer and announcer for the monthly performance.  “The Radio Hour was begun by the Waynesboro Cultural Commission as part of Downtown Waynesboro’s Third Friday event.  While the other activities have disappeared, the Radio Hour under the auspices of the Wayne Theatre Alliance continues as strong as ever with its showcase of local, regional and national talent in a format that recalls the days when Radio was the king of popular entertainment.  I’m pleased to have had a part in its creation and successful run.”

The final performance will feature SaraJane McDonald, a passionate, young Country Music singer/songwriter from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  McDonald’s determination, conviction, and spunk will serve her well as she continues to pursue her young life’s goal: to be a Country Music singer.  And she is on her way.  She has opened for Aaron Tippin, John Anderson, Keith Bryant, and Jimmy Fortune.  She also appears as a special guest on the WVPT’s Shenandoah Jamboree.

Also on tap is Lorie Strother a talent who has a special place at the Radio Hour and at WTA’s Gateway Theatre.  Strother is known nationally as the Dreaded Blues Lady and has toured widely in the Middle and South East with her Blues repertoire.  When she is backed up by the Boogie Kings, her singing moves to a new dimension.  She hosted the Gateway’s Open Mic Nights as a way to give back to emerging talents in the area.

David Young, aka Duffy, the singing cobbler, will help end the eighth season with a new poem, Cowboys in a Bar on a Saturday Night. Duffy has just returned from headlining the One Man Jam Fest at Silver Lake in Elgon, WV.  Duffy has appeared in every season of the River City Radio Hour. His combination of poetry and music has become one of the hallmarks of the monthly performances.

The Radio Hour will conclude its new historical drama series, Ladies of the Library.  The final episode set in motion the strategy that led to the building of Waynesboro’s Carnegie Library in 2015.   The indomitable Mrs. Stevens uses her political wiles to gain support for a public library, land for a new building, and money from Andrew Carnegie.

Completing the evening’s entertainment will be The River City Radio Hour regulars.  The Boogie Kings bring the musical genius of William Hayes on keyboard, Sam Brown on percussion and Richard Adams on every other instrument.  Marsha Howard again shares laughter and a bit of irony with her latest sets of jokes.  The popular sing-a-long will end the show.

Admission to the June 19th   River City Radio Hour is Pay-What-You-Will at the door with open seating.  There are no advanced reservations.
