ur-spiders1Three players in double-figures and a stellar defensive effort led the Richmond men’s basketball team to its fourth straight victory with 74-44 defeat of the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College.

Senior Terry Allen led the way with his second straight double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season and 11th of his career. Classmate Trey Davis chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, while redshirt freshman Khwan Fore added a career-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

“It was great to win the game before the break,” head coach Chris Mooney said. “I thought our defense was really good. I think that it’s been improving. We forced some turnovers and I thought that most of their shots were challenged or contested.”

Defensively, the Spiders wreaked havoc on the Blue Hose, forcing them into 22 turnovers, the most since Feb. 27, 2013. Presbyterian made just eight second-half field goals and shot 36 percent for the game.

Richmond heads into the holiday break with a four-game winning streak, averaging a margin of victory of 19.8 ppg over that span.

Fore capped off an 11-0 Spider run with a three-pointer from the wing which gave Richmond an 11-4 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half.

The Blue Hose worked its way back into the game, tying the score at 11-11, before Allen ignited a 13-4 run that gave the Spiders a 24-15 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the stanza.

Richmond’s defense forced Presbyterian into 12 first-half turnovers and held the Blue Hose without a field goal en route to a 34-21 halftime lead.

Three-pointers from Allen and ShawnDre’ Jones sparked a 17-4 run to start the second half as the Spiders’ lead ballooned to as high as 27, 51-24, with under 14 minutes to play.

Richmond’s lead would reach 30 on three different occasions in the second half, including a dunk by freshman Julius Johnson with just over two minutes to play that capped off the scoring in the contest

The Spiders hit the road after the holiday, heading to Texas Tech on Tuesday, December 29. Game time on Fox Sports Southwest is set for 9 p.m. EST. The Red Raiders currently sit in the top-10 in RPI in the NCAA.
