The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced the state’s estimated inventories for livestock and grains. The statistics are from the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
CATTLE INVENTORY
The total inventory for cattle and calves in Virginia for January 1, 2016, was estimated at 1.48 million. Total inventory was up 10,000 head from last year. Six classes showed increases from the previous year.
Beef cow inventory was estimated at 629,000 head and milk cows were estimated at 91,000 head. Cows and heifers that have calved were estimated at 720,000 head, down 10,000 head from 2015.
Heifers 500 lbs. and over were estimated at 200,000 head, up 5,000 from last year’s estimate. Beef replacement heifers totaled 95,000 head, down 15,000 from January 2015. Dairy heifers, at 47,000 head, were up 4,000 from 2015. Other heifers, at 58,000 head, were up 16,000 from the previous year.
Steers 500 pounds and over numbered 160,000 head, up 5,000 from 2015. Bulls 500 pounds and overwere unchanged from a year ago and numbered 40,000 head. Calves less than 500 pounds were estimated at 360,000 head, up 10,000 from the 2015 estimate. Cattle on feed were estimated at 22,000 head, up 2,000 from the previous year.
The 2015 calf crop was estimated at 660,000 head, up 10,000 from the previous year’s estimate.
SHEEP AND LAMB INVENTORY
According to the Virginia Field Office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service sheep and lamb inventories are unchanged but goat inventories increased in Virginia from last year.
The total number of sheep in Virginia on January 1, 2016, was estimated at 75,000 head, unchanged from the previous year’s estimate. All breeding sheep and lambs were estimated at 60,000 head and all market sheep and lambs were estimated at 15,000 head. Breeding ewes remained at 50,000 head, and breeding rams remained at 3,000 head. Replacement lambs numbered 7,000, a decrease of 2,000 from 2015. Lamb crop for 2015 increased by 3,000 from last year to 58,000 head.
VIRGINIA GRAIN STOCKS
Virginia corn stocks stored in off-farm facilities on December 1, 2015, totaled 11.1 million bushels, compared to 8.86 million bushels stored off-farm on December 1, 2014.
Soybean stocks stored off the farm totaled 6.76 million bushels on December 1, 2015, compared to 5.64 million bushels stored off the farm the previous year.
Virginia wheat stocks stored off the farm totaled 7.28 million bushels on December 1, 2015, compared to 7.13 million bushels stored off the farm a year earlier.
Oats stock stored off the farm on December 1, 2015, totaled 20,000 bushels, down 4,000 bushels from December 1, 2014.
