Recount, day one: Mark Herring increases lead in AG race

Democrat Mark Herring gained 91 votes on his margin on day one of the statewide recount of ballots in the 2013 Attorney General race.

mark herringFairfax County was given a one-day head start on the rest of the state because of the volume of votes that it will need to process for the recount. With one-third of the county’s 240 precincts counted, Herring’s overall state lead had grown to 256 votes over Republican Mark Obenshain.

“We saw significant growth in the margin of the Herring victory today; frankly, greater than we initially anticipated,” the lead legal counsel for the Herring campaign, Marc Elias, said Monday night. “We expect to maintain or increase this margin as the recount expands to additional jurisdictions tomorrow. We look forward to the court declaring Mark Herring the winner of the recount later this week.

Mark Obenshain spokesman Paul Logan cautioned that it’s a bit early to drawing conclusions to the final outcome of the recount just yet.

“What we have seen so far today, as we expected, is that the numbers have already started to change, as the second, more thorough count is conducted,” Logan said. “That’s why it was important to go through the recount, and to give Virginia voters the assurance they deserve in this historically close election.”

No numbers were available from two other recounts that got going on Monday in Alexandria and Cheseapeake.

The special three-judge panel overseeing the recount is expected to rule on the final outcome by the end of the week.
