ODU women fall to Maryland in Paradise Jam

odu logoBehind 51.5 percent shooting from the floor (34-66), the Maryland Terrapins defeated the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs 95-49 on Thursday night in the 2015 Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Jennie Simms led the way for Old Dominion with 23 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Destinee Young added six points and seven boards. Brene Moseley led all scorers with 26 points on a staggering 10-of-12 (.833) shooting performance, while two other players recorded double-digit points for Maryland.

Old Dominion was held to just six points the first quarter, while Maryland stormed out of the gates and scored 30 points and shot 65 percent from the floor (11-17). The Lady Monarchs continued the fight and leveled with the Terrapins in the second quarter, 18-18. Despite the Lady Monarchs more than doubling their scoring output from the first period, the Terrapins held the 48-24 edge over ODU at halftime.

ODU continued its shooting woes in the third period, going 6-for-24 (.250) from the floor and 2-for-9 from beyond the arc. Maryland picked up their offensive attack and scored 29 points on 8-for-14 shooting. The Terps also forced ODU to foul nine times, which led to 12 points from the charity stripe. Maryland held ODU to nine points in the fourth, while scoring 18 more points to secure the 46-point victory.

For the game, Maryland held a 51-38 advantage on the glass, but Old Dominion grabbed 20 offensive rebounds compared to Maryland’s 16. The Terps also held the Lady Monarchs to a season low 22.9 percent from the floor.

UP NEXT FOR ODU
The Lady Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. (ET) against the Pittsburgh Panthers at the University of the Virgin Islands in the 2015 Paradise Jam.

Pitt is led by Kalista Walters on offense, as she is averaging 16.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Brenna Wise chips in 11.0 points and leads the team with 9.0 rebounds a game. As a team, Pittsburgh averages 72.7 points per outing and has outscored its opponents 218-143 so far this season. Suzie McConnell-Serio is in her third season at the helm for the Panthers. This past season she led Pitt to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the Panthers went toe-to-toe with Tennessee on its home court.
