virginia north carolinaNorth Carolina broke open a close game with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away to a 35-14 win over UVA on Saturday in Charlottesville.

UNC (6-2, 4-1 ACC) led 14-7 at the half, and added to the lead midway through the third quarter on a 10-yard TD pass from Mitch Trubisky to Thomas Jackson.

A T.J. Logan 4-yard TD run pushed the lead to 28-7 at the end of three.

Virginia (2-5, 1-2 ACC) got back to within two scores on a 1-yard TD run by Taquan Mizzell with 9:01 to go.

Trubisky connected with Austin Proehl on a 46-yard scoring pass 31 seconds later to put the game away.

The Tar Heels gained 488 yards of total offense, and the UNC defense, which had given up 450.7 yards per game coming in, limited Virginia to just 253 yards on Saturday.

Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert struggled again on Saturday, completing 19 of his 32 pass attempts for 126 yards before being lifted in the fourth quarter for backup Connor Brewer.

Brewer was 2-for-12 passing for six yards.

Matt Johns, last year’s starting quarterback, threw a touchdown pass on a trick play in the second quarter, a fake field goal that had Johns connect with tight end Evan Butts on an 11-yard TD pass.

Trubisky was 24-for-31 passing for 310 yards and three touchdowns.

Elijah Hood had 107 yards on 16 carries. Logan had 61 yards on 10 carries.

Ryan Switzer had eight catches for 72 yards. Howard had 109 yards on seven catches.

Mizzell had his best game of the season on the ground for Virginia, gaining 106 yards on 19 carries. He also had a team-high seven catches, but gained only 25 yards receiving, which was also a team-high total.

Safety Quin Blanding had a game-high 13 tackles, eight solos, for the Cavs.
