New local radio station WQSV to host Aug. 15 fundraiser

Contributors

wqsvJoin Staunton’s newest local radio station, WQSV, on August 15th for its first fundraising event at The Pompei Lounge in Staunton.

WQSV 106.3 is a project of The Staunton Media Alliance, a budding nonprofit offering community radio for Staunton and parts of Augusta County and Waynesboro.

As Staunton’s first local community radio station, WQSV will have in-studio performances and interviews with local musicians and play the music listeners want to hear. The station will offer a community arts & music calendar, local weather and specialty shows that feature Blues music and much more.

The station’s mission is to “foster community through music, broadcast education and discovery.” The radio station is a way to bring local music and broadcast radio education to the area. Local students will have the opportunity to learn about radio

broadcasting and staff will consist of mostly volunteers. WQSV encourages those with disabilities to apply.

WQSV is not corporately owned, this allows more flexibility to focus on the community in unlimited ways. In addition to local music their format will include music from Bob Marley, Alabama Shakes, The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, the Counting Crows, The Avett Brothers, The Decemberists and David Bowie.

To help with fundraising efforts, The Pompei Lounge and The Silverback Distillery will sponsor an event from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Aug. 15 at The Pompei Lounge in Staunton.

The night will include five bands, giveaways from The Silverback Distillery, $2 per chance to win prize drawings and gift certificates from local businesses. Those who attend are asked for a suggested donation of $10 to help get the station on air. Bands include Blind Peach, Pete Stallings & Friends, Sarah Lynna & The Misfit Toys, The Findells and Hound Dog Hill. Leo Charre will do FREE portraits and the guys from The Dwell Collective will participate in a live painting.

The station should be up and running by fall or late winter, depending on funding.
