Nats edge New York Mets, 1-0

nationals_logoA second-inning Michael Taylor RBI infield single stood up in a tense 1-0 Washington Nats win over the New York Mets on Saturday night.

Gio Gonzalez (2-2) was masterful, striking out nine, giving up six hits and walking two in seven innings of work. Drew Storen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Mets starter Jon Niese took the hard-luck loss, giving up a run on nine hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking one.

The story was Gonzalez, who’d had issues with command through his first four starts of 2015, walking 11 in 23.1 innings. Two-thirds of Gonzalez’s pitches – 74 of 111 – were strikes, and Gonzalez and three Washington relievers faced just two New York at bats with runners in scoring position.
