In a game that remained scoreless through seven innings, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans struck for a run in the eighth, two in the ninth, and squeaked past the Salem Red Sox 3-0 Tuesday night at LewisGale Field.
Both Teddy Stankiewicz and Jonathan Martinez were marvelous in the contest, as neither starting pitcher allowed a run. Stankiewicz worked around trouble and left runners on the bases in all but one of his innings. He did not allow a run on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
On the other side, Martinez carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, a bid that ended with a Yoilan Cerse single. Martinez pitched effectively to contact, in his six innings he struck out just two while walking a pair and allowing only the one hit.
The Pelicans broke the scoreless tie in the eighth inning beginning with a single from Pin-Chieh Chen. With two outs and Victor Caratini batting, Chen stole second base to move into scoring position. The Sox elected to intentionally walk Caratini and in the ensuing at bat, Cael Brockmeyer drove a single over the leaping Mauricio Dubon, and scored Chen for the first run of the game.
Insurance followed in the ninth inning with Carlos Penalver singling to begin the frame. Trey Martin followed with a two-run blast off of the left field foul pole, giving Myrtle Beach a 3-0 advantage.
Forrestt Allday singled in the bottom of the ninth but the Red Sox managed nothing further and dropped their fourth straight and seventh of their last eight. The two hits managed by the offense represents the fewest that Salem has recorded in any game this season.
David Garner (2-1) picked up the win with two perfect innings and one strikeout. Kyle Kraus took the loss, as he allowed all three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Allday was 1-for-4 and Cerse went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Kevin Heller was 0-for-3 and snapped his on-base streak at 17 games.
Salem and Myrtle Beach continue the three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. Kevin McAvoy (7-9, 4.00) will pitch for the Sox against Myrtle Beach’s Jen-Ho Tseng (5-6, 3.41). Fans unable to attend can listen to the game on 1240 AM ESPN Roanoke, online at salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
