vmiIn the first of a two-game Southern Conference road swing, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by a 3-0 score to host East Tennessee State Tuesday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The Keydets (0-11, 0-5) played a highly defensive battle in the first half by limiting the Bucs to three shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes. Despite the force, ETSU (7-4-1, 3-1-1) managed to sneak in a goal off a corner kick with five minutes before the half as Jeffrey George put a head on the ball and put it into the top of the net for what came to be the deciding goal.

The Bucs utilized a heavy attack in the second half to open up the game, outshooting the Keydets by a 15-1 margin, to score two insurance goals midway through the period. ETSU’s Fletcher Ekern scored his fifth goal of the year at the 61:37 mark for a 2-0 lead before teammate Serge Gomis added the final tally moments later. Cameron Woodfin was credited with an assist on both efforts.

VMI goalie Robert Allen played a complete game in the loss as he earned four saves on the night. Junior Tyler Colgan registered VMI’s shot attempt during the game that required a save from ETSU keeper Jonny Sutherland, who earned the shutout victory.

The Keydets return to action Saturday with a game at Furman as the second half of conference play begins. Kickoff is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Greenville, South Carolina.
