vmi_logoTrailing just 1-0 at the half, the VMI men’s soccer team was overcome by a barrage of goals by visiting UNC Greensboro in the second half as the Spartans went on to earn a 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field in Lexington, Virginia.

VMI played a man down for the majority of the game by way of a red card issued early in the first half, resulting in a 10-man team for all but 15 minutes of the match.

The Spartans got on the board early with a goal from Christopher Reingen in the fourth minute on a breakaway in which he took a cross from Jacques Francois and put it into the lower right corner for the quick advantage. VMI held its own for the remainder of the half as goalie Alex Guerra earned six saves in the opening 45 minutes to contain the UNCG attack.

Francois got things going quickly in the second half for the Spartans as he scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes while Noah DeAngelo added another to blossom the UNCG lead to 4-0 with 35 minutes remaining.

The Spartans added three goals over the final 30 minutes to earn the 7-0 victory. UNCG keeper Jon Milligan earned his first win of the season while Guerra picked up the loss.

VMI returns to SoCon action Tuesday with a home game versus Mercer. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
