St. Mary’s College scored three times in the second half to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit as the Seahawks handed Bridgewater College a 3-2 defeat Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles struck first when Leo Alcantara netted his first collegiate goal in the 10th minute for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead. Alcantara took the shot from the edge of the box and placed it into the top right corner of the goal.
Bridgewater held the 1-0 lead at the break, but the Seahawks scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the second half to take the lead.
The hosts tied the score in the 59th minute on a goal when Sunny Chhatani gathered up a loose ball and found the back of the net. The Seahawks moved ahead in the 66th minute when Anoi Hindle put in his own rebound for a 2-1 Seahawks lead.
The Eagles responded and tied the game a minute after Hindle put the Seahawks ahead. Tim Bedell sent a cross into the box and Max Chacon converted the goal to knot the score at 2-2.
St. Mary’s scored the game winner in the 81st minute when Juwan Kearson scored off an assist from Hindle. Hindle sent a free kick to the far post where Kearson was able to score the deciding goal.
The Seahawks held a 15-7 edge in shots, including a 12-5 advantage in the second half. St. Mary’s also held a 4-2 edge in corner opportunities.
Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis finished the contest with four saves. Seahawks keeper Patrick Paolini also recorded four saves.
The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles, now 1-1-2 overall. St, Mary’s improved to 4-0-1 on the year.
Bridgewater is back in action Thursday afternoon when the Eagles host Southern Virginia. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
