Men’s soccer: Bridgewater picks up key ODAC points with 2-0 win over Shenandoah

bridgewater eaglesBridgewater College netted a pair of goals in the second half Tuesday afternoon to defeat Shenandoah 2-0 for a key conference victory.

The Eagles improved to 8-5-2 overall and, more importantly, reached the .500 mark in the conference to even their record at 3-3.

Both teams struggled to generate offense in the scoreless first half with the Eagles holding a slim 6-4 edge in total shots.

After the halftime break, the Eagles took advantage of a set piece in the 51st minute to get on the scoreboard. The Eagles were awarded a corner kick, their sixth of the game, and Thomas White lofted a kick into the box.Aaron McElhenny headed his shot just inside the post to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles worked at the offensive end to add an insurance goal, but the Hornets defense stayed solid.

Bridgewater just missed a chance in the 68th minute when Pepe Gonzalez took a shot from the right side, but the ball hit the far post and bounced back into the playing field.

The Eagles finally managed to add the key insurance goal late in the contest. Garrett Shan possessed the ball on the left side and worked along the end line. Shan touched a pass into the box in front of the goal andJonathan Min finished with the goal to make the score 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the contest.

Bridgewater outshot the visitors 12-3 in the second half to finish with an 18-7 advantage in total shots. The Eagles also held a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis finished with three saves to record the shutout. Shenandoah keeper Keegan Fairchild turned away five shots.

Bridgewater returns to action this Saturday for an ODAC Homecoming matchup with Roanoke College. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
