McEachin statement on Keep Families Together Act

Donald McEachinCongressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement on the Keep Families Together Act – legislation that would aim to stop this administration’s practice of family separation.

“I am pleased to be an original cosponsor of the Keep Families Together Act, the bill that would prohibit the egregious tragedy of separating children from their parents at the border. President Trump could stop this immoral travesty with one executive action, but he refuses to act. In the absence of presidential leadership, my colleagues and I have demonstrated that we are determined to stop these abhorrent and immoral practices and keep families together.

“What is happening at the border is unconscionable and echoes our grievous errors of locking up Japanese-Americans during World War II. Decades later, we apologized to Japanese-Americans, but no apology will make up for the mental and emotional trauma these children experience every day.

“Pediatricians and other child experts have spoken with virtually one voice – all uniformly declaring this policy to be cruel and to leave lasting scars on these young victims. Churches, synagogues, mosques and other venues of our ethical values have condemned this practice.

“My colleagues and I will continue to vigorously and relentlessly fight this. Protecting our most vulnerable is not only our greatest responsibility, but it is at the core of our values as a country. I call on the Republicans to step up and help bring an end to this inhumane debacle.”
