Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe announced at a press conference on Thursday the nomination of Secretary Maurice Jones as Secretary of Commerce and Trade. Jones, a Kenbridge native, is the former president of the Pilot Media Group, and currently serves as deputy secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

state-capitol2“I am pleased to announce the selection of Secretary Maurice Jones to join my cabinet as the Secretary of Commerce and Trade,” said Gov.-elect McAuliffe. “Secretary Jones’ long record of service in state and federal government, his experience in the private sector, and his commitment to strengthening Virginia’s communities will make him a key asset in my administration as we work to find common ground on pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing our economy.”

At HUD, Jones oversees the day-to-day operations and manages the over-$40 billion operating budget of an agency with over 8000 employees. Previously, Jones was the President of Pilot Media, where he led Hampton Roads’ largest print and digital organization through the worst of the recession. Jones also is the former director of the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, and served as Governor Warner’s Deputy Chief of Staff while at the same time served as the Commissioner of Virginia’s Department of Social Services. Jones is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, attended Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, and earned a law degree from the University of Virginia.

“I am honored to be nominated to join Gov.-elect McAuliffe’s team of leaders focused on bringing people of both parties together around a vision for a brighter future for Virginia families,” said Secretary Jones. “I look forward to hitting the ground running tackling the challenges Virginia’s economy faces and creating a better environment for Virginia’s families, workforce, and businesses.”
