Ustad Shafaat Khan, a world-renowned Indian master of the sitar, surbahar and tabla, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College.

The program is free and open to the public.

The son of legendary sitar and surbahar maestro Ustad Imrat Khan, Ustad Shafaat Khan made his debut at the age of 11 in the King’s Lynn Festival opened by the Queen Mother. Since then he has performed in countries throughout the world, including China, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia and the United Kingdom. He also has performed in many cities in the United States.

He is the first known artist to attain simultaneous excellence in performing on the sitar, surbahar and tabla.

Khan shared a television performance with Ray Charles in Germany and also performed with Stevie Wonder at the Bonaroo Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the U.S. He performed his composition, “River of Strings,” at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia accompanied by a symphony orchestra.

Through his music, Khan has helped raise money for various charitable purposes, including aid for flood victims, disabled children, battered women and tsunami victims.

Khan has released three CDs produced by Dr. Deepak Chopra, in which he performed on the sitar and surbahar and accompanied himself on the tabla, a first in Indian classical music.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,850 undergraduate students.
