Krizek files bill to grant in-state tuition to Puerto Rico residents

virginia general assemblyVirginia Del. Paul Krizek (D-44) introduced legislation today that would grant in-state tuition to residents of U.S. territories affected by natural disasters in 2017, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

HB46 would extend in-state tuition to, “Any resident of a United States territory for which a major disaster has been declared by the President of the United States in 2017” and would expire after 2022.

“It’s imperative these bright, young students continue their studies and not worry about living without electricity or limited access to clean water,” said Krizek.

Universities in Florida and New York have offered in-state tuition to these residents in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Nearly 50% of Puerto Rico remains without power.
