James Madison baseball head coach Spanky McFarland announced the addition of seven student-athletes to the program with each signing a national letter of intent during the NCAA’s fall signing period.
“We feel very good about it,” stated McFarland of his newly-inked group of newcomers. “It’s a lot like what we usually try to do. We try to fill some needs the best we can without knowing what the pro draft is going to do to us. I think the biggest thing about this class is that they’re athletic. Many have played more than one sport and been very good in several sports.”
The seven new student-athletes will travel to Harrisonburg from five different states and fill a variety of roles with emphasis placed upon left-handed pitching and right-handed hitting. They officially signed their intent documents during a team event with all seven individuals present at Memorial Hall.
Logan Corrigan, LHP/1B/OF, 5-11, 195, L/L, Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park
Corrigan joins the Dukes from the Steel City and the former high school of JMU recruiting coordinator Ted White. He helped the Bethel Park Black Hawks to the WPIAL Section 5 conference title last year and a district semifinal appearance as a sophomore. In an injury-shortened junior season, he hit .375 with a .644 slugging percentage and .403 on-base percentage while still leading his team in hits, doubles, triples and home runs. As a sophomore, he was an All-Section honoree while hitting .440 with a .719 slugging percentage and posting a 5-2 record on the mound with a 3.00 ERA.
Michael Evans, LHP, 6-4, 180, L/L, Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall
In addition to starring for the Marshall High School Statesmen in Northern Virginia, Evans excelled as a member of the Northern Virginia Baseball Elite Showcase Stars squad. The team placed third in the 2012 18U World Wood Bat Association (WWBA) national championship and fifth in the 2012 WWBA underclass championship. He was a Second Team All-District selection in the Liberty District.
Ky Parrott, OF, 5-9, 160, S/L, Herndon, Va./Herndon
Parrott competes for former JMU standout Greg Miller and the Hornets of Herndon High School. The two-year starter was a First Team All-District honoree in the Concorde District in 2012 and was an honorable mention selection in 2011. He played alongside Evans for the Northern Virginia Baseball Elite Showcase Stars during the 2012 WWBA achievements.
Dylan Horne, LHP/CF, 6-1, 180, L/L, Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee
Horne, who McFarland called one of the best current scholastic athletes in any sport in the Shenandoah Valley, plays for head coach George Laase and the Leemen of Robert E. Lee High School. He was a Second Team All-Region selection last spring and was an honorable mention All-State football honoree in 2011.
Brian Lawler, C, 6-1, 220, L/R, Medford, N.J./Shawnee
Lawler, the two-year starting varsity catcher for the Renegades of Shawnee High School, hit .434 in his junior campaign with 27 RBIs, a .485 on-base percentage and .625 slugging percentage. He was named First Team All-Conference as the Renegades captured the 2012 Olympic Patriot Division championship. He hit .415 and garnered Second Team All-Conference accolades as a sophomore in another division championship season. Competing for the MapleZone MuckDawgs, Lawler earned a fifth-place finish out of 96 teams in the 2010 WWBA World Underclass Tournament in Fort Myera, Fla.
Logan Quimuyog, 1B/OF, 6-2, 190, R/R, Lynn Haven, Fla./A. Crawford Mosley
Quimuyog has started each of his three varsity seasons at first base for the Dolphins at Mosley High School. The team went 25-5 in his sophomore season and achieved a No. 4 ranking in the state of Florida at the 6A level. He has extensive club experience, having competed in the East Coast Professional Showcase in Syracuse, the Florida Diamond Club and the Top 100 Florida Showcase. He is also a letter winner in football for the Dolphins.
Josh Wyatt, SS, 5-9, 180, R/R, Eden, Md./James M. Bennett
Wyatt and the Clippers of James M. Bennett High School have been dominant at the Maryland 3A level, winning back-to-back state championships and amassing 44 consecutive victories. The Clippers need 12 more wins at the start of the 2013 season to eclipse the mark. Wyatt was named the Bayside Conference Baseball Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year while also starring on the soccer team, winning three straight All-Conference awards.
