Information overload: Biased media outlets filtering information for us

information overload“Information overload” is a term used by American futurist and author Alvin Toffler for the world we live in today. The author, who passed away recently, used the term to describe the state in which we get under the pressure of all the information dumped on us on a daily basis. Today, to find the information we need, we have to dig through layers of ads, click bait, and spam. Luckily, some media outlets are specialized enough to focus on the exact things their users need, offering them what they want to find without all the fuss and filling surrounding it.

Many people find it difficult to keep up to date with the latest game releases – except for those with a massive media coverage, made by “Triple A” publishers. Independent games are often completely overlooked by the media, and complete categories of game developers are only known to their most devoted players and some specialty publications. One of these, www.onlinepokiesfun.com, is among the leading sources for news about the latest games and promotions offered by the companies in their focus area: real money online gaming.

Online Pokies Fun specializes on a game developer from the Isle of Man, a British crown dependency, called Microgaming. The company was the pioneer of the online gaming business, launching the first ever fully functional online gaming venue of them all in 1994. Since then, the developer expanded its business on all continents, and its game library to more than 700 titles built either by itself or by its subcontractors – smaller, independent companies releasing their original content through their network. On mobile devices, Microgaming has built its library from scratch to include more than 100 games at this time – and their number is continuously growing.

Although Microgaming releases new games each month and announces them through its website and YouTube channel, the mainstream media is hardly ever covering its new releases. Two years ago, when the developer built new games based on some of the most popular blockbusters from the 1990s, all of them being revived on the big screen in the coming years, websites like Online Pokies Fun have been rejoicing. But the mainstream media kept completely silent about these games. Some players, with their eyes clouded by the information overload, have only found out about the games’ releases when they hit their gaming outlets of choice.

Filtering the information is harder than ever today. Most people that are successful at it have cut their chords, giving up on TV channels and radio stations completely, and rely entirely on online sources. But even the sources they rely on are not mainstream, but small, specialized publishers focusing in-depth on a certain topic. This is the only way to get the exact information they need in our world overloaded with information on all channels.
