The Heifetz International Music Institute is hosting a special “Heifetz On Tour Scholarship Concert” to benefit the Institute’s new Shenandoah Scholarship campaign.
The concert will take place on Saturday night, Feb. 7th, at 7:30 pm in Francis Auditorium, in the Pearce Science Center on the campus of Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. Mary Baldwin College is the year-round host of the Institute, and the site of its world-renowned six-week summer program and festival dedicated to training some of the world’s most promising young string players.
The “Heifetz On Tour Scholarship Concert” will feature four of the Institute’s most outstanding recent alumni, all of whom attended the Institute in either 2014 or 2013: Violinists Chloé Kiffer and Katharina Kang, violist Andrew Gonzalez, and cellist YiQun Xu. They will be joined by pianist Anton Smirnoff, a member of the Heifetz Institute’s impressive lineup of collaborative piano faculty. Together, the five musicians will present a varied program that will range from dazzling solo pieces to masterworks of chamber music by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Dvořák, and Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Heifetz Institute’s recently- announced Shenandoah Scholarship Campaign, an unprecedented dollar-for-dollar matching-grant challenge: If the Institute can raise $100,000 for scholarships before March 31st, 2015, it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Heifetz Institute Board, providing a total of $200,000 for scholarship assistance to attend the 2015 Institute, which will run from June 25-August 8.
“The Shenandoah Scholarship Campaign was inspired by our goal to bring deserving students from all over the globe – regardless of their ability to pay – to this beautiful part of the world for a summer that is guaranteed to change their lives,” according to Heifetz Institute Executive Director Benjamin K. Roe. “There is no better illustration of that than the remarkable artists performing at this concert. One is from France, one is from South Korea by way of Germany, one is from China, and one is a native of Chesapeake, Virginia…and a prizewinner in the Sphinx Competition for gifted Latino and African-American classical musicians. All of them received scholarships to come to the Institute – and the Shenandoah Valley – for the first time in their lives.”
