Hearing Healthcare of Virginia launches community wellness program

hearing-health-careRecent studies have shown a direct link between hearing loss and diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular disease and depression. Citing these studies, the American Medical Association is recommending that everyone over the age of 50 have an annual hearing screening.

Like an eye exam, physical or mammogram, an annual hearing exam is recommended by major national organizations including the AARP.

Hearing Healthcare of Virginia, with six locations in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia, is pitching in to make it easier for people to get a baseline hearing screening.

“Hearing loss should no longer be viewed as a minor issue, something that I can deal with or just an annoyance,” said hearing instrument specialist Christian Pogreba, the president of Hearing Healthcare of Virginia, which is offering free baseline hearing screenings to local residents over the age of 50 through its Community Wellness Program.

“Our mission is to empower those in our community with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision regarding their healthcare,” Pogreba said.

The free 15-minute screenings will be offered at Hearing Healthcare of Virginia locations in Charlottesville, Covington, Culpeper, Fishersville, Harrisonburg and Lexington.

The goal for Hearing Healthcare of Virginia is to promote good hearing health, but as Pogreba emphasized, it’s not just about hearing loss.

“It’s about overall health. Hearing is a part of the overall picture. We are trying to educate patients that it is so important to have your hearing checked,” Pogreba said.
