Jack days of wine and roses2Harrisonburg, Va., artist Ragan McManus will exhibit, “Days of Wine and Roses,” in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College Oct. 20 – Nov. 19.

McManus will present an artist’s talk at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, in the Boitnott Room. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

The exhibition is influenced by the 1962 film, Days of Wine and Roses, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. Through the use of painting, drawing and mixed-media, McManus’ work conveys the romanticism, decline and devastation created by the disease of alcoholism.

McManus served as executive director of the Arts Council of the Valley from 2012-14. She creates work in her studio and exhibits at local galleries.

In 2003, McManus accepted the position of director of education at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art where she was later promoted to merge both exhibitions and education departments, serving as departmental director until 2011.

McManus is the National Art Education Association’s (NAEA) 2008 Southeastern Art Educator of the Year/Museum Division and Virginia Art Education Association’s (VAEA) 2006 Art Educator of the Year/Museum Division.

McManus earned an M.F.A. in studio art from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
