Redshirt junior midfielder Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) scored a match-best two goals, including a golden goal late in the first overtime period to lift the 20th-ranked James Madison field hockey team to a 4-3 triumph against Missouri State Friday night at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Dukes improved to 5-1 on the season while the Bears dropped to 2-5 overall in the second of three matches during their Virginia road trip.
With the match all tied up at 3-3, West brought the ball into the attacking zone on the right side and fired a shot pastMegan Drew on the far side of the cage for the game winner with only 47.7 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
But first, the Dukes had to open the extra stanza a player down for a span of 7:24 after an eight-minute yellow card was served to JMU in the final minute of regulation. Just over four minutes into OT, a penalty stroke was given to MSU’s Leah Reitmayer but her attempt was pushed aside by JMU rookie goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) to keep the match alive.
Once back to an even 7-on-7, Madison would fire five shots (four on goal), with the fifth being the West winner. It would not allow Missouri State to take another shot the rest of the night.
In addition to West’s pair of tallies, junior midfielder Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann Oberschule) scored once while adding one assist and junior forward Kristen Reitano (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) netted the other JMU goal.
Between the pipes, Kraeutler earned her first collegiate victory (1-0) after coming in at the half and making three saves on five shots faced in 49:12. Taking the loss for MSU was Drew, who tallied 11 saves on 15 shots on goal, which included five stops in OT.
The Bears had a pair of goals by Charlie Redhead and another by Andrea Soler Codina in the defeat. The Dukes outshot the Bears 20-7 in the match and had a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.
In what would be a tale of two halves, Madison surged out to an early 3-0 advantage just more than 22 minutes into first half.
West opened the scoring at the 10:27 mark after she scored off a pass from Chelmowski on a corner opportunity. Nearly 11 minutes later at 21:24, senior forward Bethany Ashworth found an open Reitano out in front for a wide-open shot into the cage, making it 2-0 in favor of JMU.
The Dukes kept applying pressure and 58 seconds later, Chelmowski increased the lead to 3-0 with a goal off a broken play in the attacking zone. The Bears got on the board at the 34:05 mark when Redhead rushed into the zone on the left side, beating the JMU goalie nearside to make 3-1 at the break.
Just past five minutes into the second half, MSU trimmed its deficit to one at 3-2 when Soler Codina fired a shot high past Kraeutler. Late into regulation, Redhead tied the match at 3-3 when she attempted to get the ball in front and it ricocheted off the goalie and into the cage.
JMU will play its next two matches on the road prior to the start of Colonial Athletic Association play as the Dukes head to Richmond next Friday, Sept. 26 to take on VCU before trekking to Norfolk to battle No. 19 Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 28.
