George Mason upsets Davidson

george masonWith 1.9 seconds left on the game clock and trailing by one point, Jalen Jenkins grabbed the offensive rebound and converted the put back to give George Mason a 60-59 victory over Davidson on Homecoming.

Jenkins finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist on the evening.

GAME NOTES

-Mason (9-16, 3-9 Atlantic 10)  led by as many as 13 points in the contest and led the majority of the way until a goaltending call with4:50 on the clock gave Davidson (14-9, 8-6 A-10) its first lead, 53-51, on a Andrew McAuliffe bucket. The Wildcats used a 20-2 run midway through the second half to erase a 12-point deficit and grab their largest lead of the game at six points with 2:30 to play.
-Shevon Thompson snapped the run hitting a pair of free throws before Otis Livingston II sank his first field goal of the evening coming from three-point range to make it a 57-56 ballgame with 1:40 to play.
-Jack Gibbs returned a three-point advantage to Davidson with a layup with 1:12 to go before Jaire Grayer cut it to 59-58 hitting a jumper with 49 seconds left.
-Davidson missed a three-point attempt on the next possession with DeAndre Abram grabbing the rebound, setting up Mason’s final attempt. The Patriots pulled down two huge offensive rebounds in the final five seconds with Marko Gujanicic grabbing a missed jumper from Jenkins with 4.9 seconds left, trying to convert the tip-in before Jenkins snagged the second offensive rebound with 3.0 ticks left. Jenkins sank the game-winner with 1.9 seconds on the clock.
-In total, Mason closed on a 9-2 spurt to takeaway its first victory over Davidson since joining the A-10.
-Mason held a five-point halftime lead after Jenkins chipped in 10 points in the period and the Patriots shot 41.9 percent. The Patriots raced out to a 17-4 lead before Davidson slowly crawled back into the contest. The Wildcats shot 30.3 percent in the first half and were 0-for-9 from three-point range.

 

STAT BREAKDOWN

-Jenkins led four Patriots in double-figures with 17 points, followed by Abram with 11 points. Both Marko Gujanicic and Thompson added 10 points as Thompson posted a double-double with 10 rebounds.
-Mason won the rebounding battle, 44-36, and scored 32 points in the paint. For the game, Mason shot 37.9 percent (25-66) to Davidson’s 39.7 percent (25-63).
-Davidson was led by Gibbs with 30 points. He was followed by Brian Sullivan with nine points.
