The UVA baseball team opens the NCAA Charlottesville Regional at 11 a.m. Friday against William & Mary at Davenport Field. Please note the time change; the game originally was slated for 1 p.m. but was moved because of a forecast for inclement weather.

Virginia in the NCAA Baseball Championship

Virginia is competing in its 16th NCAA tournament, including its 13th straight trip to the Big Dance. UVA is 52-34 in the NCAA tournament and 40-18 in NCAAs over the last seven years (second most NCAA wins since 2009 – Vanderbilt, 46).

This is UVA’s ninth home regional (all in the last 13 years). Under Brian O’Connor (since 2004), UVA is 46-28 in the NCAA tourney and 31-19 in regional play. UVA owns six regional championships (2009, ‘10, ‘11, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15).

UVA advanced to the College World Series in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015, taking runner-up honors to Vanderbilt in the 2014 CWS Finals before going on a wild march to the program’s first national championship in 2015.

 

Virginia One of Five Schools in Last 13 NCAA Tournaments

Virginia is one of five Division I baseball programs to reach the NCAA tournament each of the last 13 seasons (including 2016). The Cavaliers are one of three teams in the ACC to hold that distinction.

Top current NCAA tournament streaks: Miami (44), Florida State (39), Cal State Fullerton (25), Rice (22), Virginia (13). Virginia is one of 16 schools in NCAA history to reach 13 straight NCAA tournaments (17 total occurrences).

 

Virginia Against the 2016 NCAA Field

Virginia faced 11 teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament this year (Boston College, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Wake Forest, William & Mary). Twenty-nine of Virginia’s 57 games were against NCAA qualifiers. UVA went 14-15 against those teams.
