bridgewater eaglesBig plays hurt the Eagles throughout, especially on third down, as the Bridgewater College football team fell 41-17 to #22 Thomas More on Saturday at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

Quarterback Brendon Maturey completed 13-of-19 passes for a second straight week, this time for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Malivai Barker led the Eagles in receiving (93) and rushing (33) yards.

Isaac Evans blocked a kick and led the BC defense in tackles with 10. Davey Hardesty also had 10 tackles, with both he and Evans breaking up a pass as well.

Thomas More got a monster game from wide receiver Daylin Garland, who totaled 203 yards and three scores on seven receptions.

Thomas More had four plays over 30 yards on their final three scoring drives of the first half, to take a 27-10 lead into the locker room.

Brenan Kuntz hit Garland for 33 yards down the right sideline and CT Tarrant followed with a 41-yard rush off the left end. Garland caught a slant to finish off the drive and Thomas More went up 13-3 despite a blocked PAT by Evans.

Garland broke free over the top on third down for a 56-yard score and a 20-10 visitor advantage. A 36-yard completion to Garland on third down led to another Saints touchdown later in the second quarter and a 27-10 scoreline.

Josh Yagel also saved a touchdown on the kickoff return after Anthony Rossi‘s first quarter field goal had opened the scoring for Bridgewater. The Saints would score later on the drive with a 14-yard keeper by Kuntz however.

The Eagles made big plays of their own in the first half. Barker took a screen pass midway through the second quarter and broke it 66 yards for the touchdown, pulling BC back to within a field goal at 13-10.

After the Saints had taken a 20-10 lead, Davonta Womack returned the kickoff 49 yards into TMC territory. He crossed up the kicker and would have been gone had Adam Guard not caught his foot at the 41-yard line.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Eagle defense forced third downs but was caught for major gains by the Saints. Garland went over the top again for a 49-yard score on 3rd-and-10 to make it 34-10, and Logan Winkler caught a 25-yard pass on fourth down to lead to another TD.

A 34-yard rush from Hjavier Pitts kicked off the next drive for Thomas More. The Saints drove deep into Eagles territory but Josh Brooks ended the threat with an interception at the three yardline.

The Eagles picked up another touchdown in the fourth quarter when Jay Scroggins hit Rayvon Johnson on a screen pass for the final score of 41-17. BC was unable to score again after freshman Daymon Jones recovered a fumbled snap on the next TMC possession.

Bridgewater falls to 1-1 and will play its final non-conference game of the season at The Apprentice School next Saturday. Thomas More is also 1-1 on the year.
