FMS outlasts Wytheville, 112-94

The Fishburne postgrad basketball team raced out to a 21-point lead in the first 10 minutes against Wytheville Community College and cruised from there en route to a 112-94 win Thursday night.

Not that the Caissons were fond of the cruise-in afterwards or anything.

“That was a bad defensive effort. We’re really not supposed to give up more than 50 points,” said point guard Teven Jones (a UVa. signee), who scored 11 points in limited action after picking up three fouls in the first half and his fourth five minutes into the second half.

“Offensively we played all right. Defensively, we’ve got to do a lot better than that,” said Jones’ backup, Cortell Busby (an IUPUI signee).

A Karl Ziegler field goal with 10:40 left in the first half gave FMS (7-0) a 33-12 lead, and it was 37-16 on a pair of free throws by Busby two minutes later when Wytheville responded with a 12-2 run that cut the margin to 11 at 39-28 on a jumper by Antoine Bryant at the 6:09 mark.

A fadeaway at the buzzer by Chris Bryant (a Florida Atlantic signee) made it 60-41 at the half, and the Caissons led by as many as 23 in the second half on their way to the big win.

“They made some big shots. It’s nothing we need to harp on. Sometimes that happens. It’s the game of basketball,” FMS coach Ed Huckaby said.

Bryant led five Fishburne players in double figures with 21 points. Matt Gorski added 17 and Ziegler had 16.
